Can anybody tell me how to change the way IE6 scrolls up and down in
winxp pro.
When I drag the scroll bar I get a jerky scroll. I have set smooth
scroll several times (tools/options/advanced/check use smooth scroll)

The jerky scrolling you describe could be due to other factors,
such as the amount of RAM in your system, of the amount of RAM
in your video card. Can you tell us more about your system?

O.K. I've finally got this thing to work(the scrolling).. Changed out
the graphics board (a diamond viper II,vintage 1999) to another one
from an old computer, an unknown board(has ELSA printed on it. THIS
has taken care of the scroll problem and seems to be quite fast too.
However I am now headed to buy something newer.. The problem was the
graphics board or the driver. I had reloaded the driver that came with
the board several times and that did not help. I could not seem to
find an XP driver at diamondmm.com and attempts to download a win2000
driver did not work. Thanks everbody for the help that pointed me to
the answer.

Since your problem was resolved, would you consider it fair
for me to post a formal response as an answer, and claim the
fee? Of the others who provided comments, khan1214-ga is not
a researcher, and cannot post an answer, and sparky4ca-ga
simply confirmed what I'd already noted - that it wasn't
a matter of CPU power and that driver issues seemed suspect.
I await your determination.

Sometimes, especially in the case of computer troubleshooting,
the process of arriving at an answer does amount to an exchange
of comments and clarifications, amounting to a 'forum' of sorts.
This results in some questions being answered without the
researchers knowing for certain that this is the case. It is
gratifying when a customer acknowledges the solution and offers
to pay for what they could have walked away with at no cost.

I'm very pleased to have assisted you in arriving at a solution
to your problem. May your restored computer serve you as well
as your admirable character.

all answers were good as to the fact they dealt with the problem. All
answers showed a knowledge of the problem. sublime1-ga was more on the
mark with a driver problem. No answer was on the mark exactly (bad
graphics card), but pointed me to the problem and assisted in its
resolution. Google answers is a valuable resource.

how do you scroll in IE6. Do you use scrolling mouse or scroll from
the side bar. If you are using scrolling mouse for this job then you
need to change setting in \control panel \ mouse.
Hopefully it will work.

Scroll seems to be half paging, sort of a rolling motion(like when
smooth scroll is not set)... System is AMD athlon 1.67ghz with 512k
ddr ram . works very well otherwise... I bought WINXP pro and
installed on my computer but did not think I had enough horsepower so
upgraded to a new motherboard with the amd chip and more ram... Scroll
problem was also evident on old machine. So I have concluded its a
setting I can't find in WIN XP. Current system also has cd writer /cd
reader/ floppy / and the usual software. Mouse is an ibm optical
cordless but problem persists with corded mouse (without changing
driver). Problem is evident with dragging sidebar or mouse scroll(with
wheel). Win explorer seems to scroll OK.

When I boot into win98 (I have 2 disk drives and can boot into the
other wich has win98) I have no problem. Scroll is fine. The win98 has
IE5 though.

Well, it's definitely not your horsepower...
I have the same system (though I opted for WIN2K).
Speedy, huh? As for the scrolling, there seem to
be few possibilities. I'd suspect the optical mouse
driver, since you're using it in both cases.
Have you got the latest driver, 'certified' for XP?

Have you tried 'repairing' your IE installation?
I use IE5 in WIN2K with no problems. Sadly, once
you've installed IE6 in XP, there's no going back
- it never really uninstalls.

I remember having problems with IE6 when I first
had XP installed (though I don't remember specifics).
It's one of the reasons I switched to WIN2K and IE5.

Best of luck...

Another thought...
Just for the sake of experimentation, you might
try installing the Mozilla browser, and see if
the scrolling is a problem there, too. It's a
handy little browser, too. I use it when Googling,
since it offers tabbed windows, which makes it
easier when switching between multiple pages:

Funny thing , I downloaded and installed Opera 7 beta and have the same problem.
Almost seems like its built into XP pro.

Most peculiar...
I'm assuming you did a clean install of XP after
installing the new motherboard. What video card
are you using, and have you got the latest drivers
(certified for XP) for it? When I had XP, I didn't
have this problem, and a search for it turns up
nothing specific to XP.

Defineately not the computer power. I have a Pentium 3 500 mhz, 512 MB
PC100. XP Pro. Has scrolled fine in Exploiter 6 nd in Communciator 4.8
since the day I installed it. Works fine with the mouse wheel, and
with dragging the scroll bar.

I would suggest possibly some sort of driver issue caused when you
upgraded to XP, or when you swapped the guts of the computer. Best bet
is to format and do a clean install of XP Pro. (Yes, you can do that
from the uprgade CD, as long as you have you Win98 CD handy.)
