Question ID: 136109
I want to know if there is a site that let's you know what the real
manufacturer is of a off-branded or OEM product ? I want to have a
place
to go to on a regular basis to find out who is making what. I am
mostly insterested in drives and other peripherals. I find soooo many
companies who just slap their name on a product and I want to know who
made the product to begin with.

Is there a particular peripheral or manufacturer using certain OEM
parts you are interested in?

What I need to know is when it comes to OEM CD-R/RW and DVD
-R,-RW,+RW,+R etc. Who are the manufacturers?

I mean is there a place to go to find out who is making drives for
whoever? I see Lite-on, digital research, memorex and many , many
others and I know they do not make their own drives or drive logic.
Is there a info site to determine who makes a certain drive before you
buy it? I do not want individual sites if possible, I would prefer a
single source. Multiple is OK but then I am bouncing around again.

I am mostly interested in CD/DVD drives. And more so DVD +R and +RW
drives.

I am not at all interested in chipsets or video cards or sound
cards. Just disc drives.

I found www.dvdplusrw.org and they have some info on who is making
the type of drives I want. See next generation drives for PC. But
some if not all of those companies sell mostly to OEMs who slap their
own name on them. How do I find out who they are dealing with? Sanyo
is one. They mostly sell OEM. Buffalo, NEC, Richo, all are mostly
OEM. HP goes both ways as does phillips. But who are the OEMS and
how do you tell which drive is which when its a OEM?

  Hope this helps clarify.

Hi,

Are the products you are examining have an FCC ID (printed on the
circuit board, on a label etc)?

No I am looking for products in general. I am only interested in DVD
drives are mostly just burners. I am not looking for a specific
drive. I want to be able to determine the maker of the drives at
will.

I did respond to clarify the question. I guess I was not very clear.

But as the last comment said, maybe I need to say re-badged rather
than OEM. I would like to know the drive maker or the driver logic
maker and which badge is on what. That might help clarify too.

  Thanks.

It does depend on what type of computer hardware peripherals you are
interested in. A lot of OEM products are based around a certain
chipset, for instance SIS and other chipset manufacturers that make
soundcard chipsets for laptops and motherboards. Generally OEM
hardware based on a certain chipset will only vary between
manufaturers in regards to the amount of memory added and the speed of
the memory etc as well as certain features that might be built into
the drivers. But it does depend on what type of hardware you're
actually interested in. Generally looking at the website for a
particular product will tell you what chipset it uses.

I think a more accurate term for what you are seeking maybe 'rebadged
products'. Two rebadged CD-RWs are quite probably both available as
OEM products to computer manufacturers.

I believe that Pioneer makes a lot of the CD and DVD hardware that
gets rebadged.

Good luck,

Unfortunately I can't say for any other manufacturer's, however as a
technical support rep with HP I know that none of HP's cd writer, nor
dvd writer drives are OEM. Their home networking equipment on the
other hand.. *cough* screams linksys.
