I've found a number of sources on the web that have statistics.  I
tried to pick the most credible-looking ones, as some had conflicting
information.  I felt it best to quote directly.  If you need any

the last few decades?(since World War 2)

I haven't been able to find any thing except for the following, which
really only indicates one decade.  I've got a call into a magazine
that specializes in trends, and I'll let you know if they have any
info.
