Hello maize

Do you know that the club ground is actually in Thurnby or is that
where your ex-student lives?

I have found a possibility - a New Zealander born in 1978 who recently
started playing for a club near Thurnby (2 or 3 miles away) but not in
it. Your ex-student might easily live in Thurnby while playing for
this club.
Without posting his details, I'll just say he most recently played for
Canterbury.
The club I'm thinking of is big enough to run a scheme like the one
you describe.

If this sounds helpful, just let me know. If you felt comfortable with
posting his first name or initial that would be a possible way of
confirming that I've found the right place and person.

I know that he is living in the centre of Thurnby but not which club he plays for.

might not be the right club but they should know the club you require.

He is about 23 years old and is here under a scheme for one year where
the club finds him accomodation and provides him with a job and he
plays for the club.

Hello again maize

I'm afraid my idea hasn't worked out. I had found a player from NZ
with the Leicester Tigers but he doesn't have the right initials.

Thurnby is on the outskirts of the city of Leicester and it would be a
short trip to the Tigers' ground. Perhaps if your ex-student is newly
arrived or not in the first team he wouldn't be in the list of players
on their website?
