I am looking for postgraduate degree programs for Portuguese in the US
and the UK. In Googling around, it seems that most modern language
programs appear to lump Portuguese and Spanish together as Iberian
languages, and they generally seem to have a far stronger emphasis on
Spanish. I want to find out where I could do postgrad work in
Portuguese without bogging down in Spanish topics.

I am looking for a good listing, preferably including all of the UK
options and those for major US universities, with links to the
department homepages. If these pages included a curriculum for their
Portuguese offerings, that would be great as well (a good indicator
that they are serious about Portuguese). And if you come across any
decent independent information about Portuguese post-grad programs
(ie, comparison of quality, evaluation) that would be appreciated as
well.

I'm leaving the specific area a bit vague - I am not sure exactly what
I would aim to study. Language and literature, probably, with a
Brazilian flavor. But not rejecting history or 'area studies' if they
are relevant. I want to do (most of) my reading in Portuguese and my
writing in English or Portuguese.

I've thought about studying in a lusophone country, but for family
reasons the UK and US would be strongly preferred.

), only the following seem to offer the opportunity to specialize in
Portuguese without Spanish:

Manchester University, MA in Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American
Studies

units from those offered by the Spanish and Portuguese department.

MA in Portuguese Studies
This MA enables students with special interests in the Lusophone world
to concentrate on one of three pathways – Literature and Culture,
History and Lusophone Africa. The programme of study for each student
is arranged individually with the appropriate member(s) of the
Department. There is no formal language requirement for this degree,
although the Department reserves the right to determine the minimum
level of reading ability desirable for the course of study to be
taken. The examination consists of three specialist papers, a
dissertation (about 15,000 words) and a viva voce.

University of Liverpool
MA in Hispanic studies: The course comprises five taught modules and a
dissertation. Two modules provide training in research methods and
resources. The other three are linked reading courses, one exploring
the wider background to the student's chosen area of research, one
examining in some depth a specific related topic, and one exploring
the feasibility of the dissertation topic. Candidates are expected to
propose a topic of study at the time of application and the content of
the various modules will be tailored to that topic.
MPhil/PhD: The degrees of M.Phil. (Master of Philosophy) and Ph.D.
(Doctor of Philosophy) are awarded for substantial original research

Sheffield University
MA All Sheffield MAs have a modular structure: a total of 180 credits

as possible, so that course content may be negotiated between students

departmental teaching.

University of Edinburgh
The Department of Hispanic Studies, which forms part of the Graduate

supervision for the M.Sc. by Research and/or the Ph.D. in a wide range
of cognate areas. The research interests of the staff focus mainly on
literary and cultural studies relating to Spain, Portugal and Latin
America. The list which follows is intended to give a general idea of
the principal research fields and expertise of the current academic
staff. The absence of a topic, area or author of particular interest
to you does not necessarily mean that supervision cannot be provided.
Topics include: 19th- and 20th-century Portuguese Culture and
Literature: literary influence and national identity in "Geração de
70", "Saudosismo", "Renascença Portuguesa" (particularly works of
Oliveira Martins, Guerra Junqueiro, Teixeira de Pascoaes and Miguel
Torga).
Research which bridges these areas or which involves parallel or
complementary study in another department is also welcome.
