I am searching for an article (s) in local Reading, PA newspapers for
the child molestation charge against John P. Leidy. It would be in
the summer of 1997.

nicki52,

I can probably obtain a copy of the paper article, but I do not
believe it is available online. It might be difficult to obtain
permission to post the full text of the article online; do you need
the full text, or is there certain information which I can pull from
the article for you?

John P. Leidy died on July 14, 1997. He apparently died in jail, on
accusations of child abuse charges. I don't know the detils, but his
sister said it "was all in the papers". He was being incarcerated for
child molestation charges. I tried contacting the local Reading, PA
newspaper, which said that they had nothing on-line and that I would
have to search the microfishe in the downtown library. As I live in
Florida, this is impossible to do. I would be interested in anything
and all articles you can dig up about his death and the charges
surrounding his time in jail. I would assume these accusations
started that summer, of 1997, before he was jailed. I don't think he
spent much time in jail before he died. Please find any and all
articles about this person. He was a graduated of the class of 1972
of Princeton University, and of Reading High School in '68. Thank
you!

Hi, nicki52,

Thanks for your response.

I AM interested in answering your question, but I believe that to
answer it well, your question will require more time and effort than
the average amount of time and effort associated with this price. I
will need to drive to Reading, and search microfiche day-by-day unless
they have computerized an index (which I doubt they have done). I will
probably have to pay a nominal fee to print a copy of each relevant
article as well.

Here is a link to guidelines about pricing your question:
https://answers.google.com/answers/pricing.

Again, I may be able to find such articles for you; however, because
they will be on microfiche, the only way I could put them on-line for
you would be to scan them or type them up myself. Both of these
methods would be a violation of copyright, unless I could get
permission from the paper (which is probably not likely).

So... would a brief summary of the details of the article(s) do?

If that is acceptable, and you are willing to raise your price, post a
clarification here and the system will notify me and I will take
another look at your question.

Thanks,

Dear nicki52-ga
I have found an article on an online news database relating to his
death. It is 78 words only. I have not yet read all of the article as
it is a payment site. I can post a summary of it here if that is
sufficient to answer your question.

I certainly don't need you to drive to Reading, PA to answer this
question! (Although it was kind of you to ask!)...All I was wondering
is if there were any relevant articles in the local papers about this
arrest/death. The local Reading paper said it would be online in
February, so perhaops I can look up obits at that time,. As for the
78 word obit you did find, was it in the Princeton Alumni Weekly?
(Called "PAW") from Princeton, NJ? I have already read that one, but
of course, it doens't memtion the child molestation charges. I am
basically interested in the arrest, the accusations, etc, before his
death in jail, which was a suspected murder. (No autopsy) Anything
new I can learn from you, besides having you drive to Reading to read
microfishe? Thanks.

nicki52,

I don't live that far from Reading, and I wouldn't mind driving there,
I only asked if you might consider upping the price a little just to
make the trip worthwhile. I have found out that I may actually be able
to make hardcopies of the microfiche articles (hopefully at not more
than 25c or so per copy), bundle them up, and forward them to Google
Answers, who could then forward them on to you, if that would be
acceptable. Just let me know! :)

Yes, I would be willing to up my price. What would you consider a
fair amount for the time and trip? Thanks.

nicki52,

Cool! I was kind of getting excited about the possibility of looking
into this for you. I believe that $20-25 would be fair value for the
Question, if that is acceptable to you.

Okay...a deal. 25 bucks. But, how do I go about paying? I can't
find a link which hooks me up to your e-mail, and if I return to
Google Home, I have to ask a question all over again. How do I make
payment?

Okay- I've uped the ante. Do I need to pay first? Or do I pay after
the question is answered? (No info on paying from christopherwu) Whe
you are researching this topic, I would be interested in any and all
info about the circumstances surrounding the child abuse case, and his
death in jail. (His sister says it was "suspicious"...???) Do you
need any more info from me about John P. Leidy?

nicki52,

Thank you! It is too late today, but I will try to go to Reading
tomorrow. I will not post an "Answer" here until I have done my
research, in case I am unable to find for you what I consider to be a
suitable amount of material. Any additional information you can give
me that is not TOO personal would be helpful. Please do not include
the first or last name of the alleged victim, or any information that
might be hurtful or harmful to John's surviving family members.

Hi- I have no idea of who the alleged victim/s were. Of course, you
cannot post info which is too personal. All I know is what I have
given you to work on so far, but in addition, I would like to see a
photo of John. Good luck on the research.

Hi, nicki52!

I had a service person scheduled to come to my house yesterday morning
at 10:00am. They didn't show up until 3:00pm. (I was NOT happy!) So I
did not get to Reading yesterday, and I spent today getting ready to
leave on a short trip tomorrow. I will be back on Friday night, and I
will try to get to Reading right after I get back. I will keep you
updated. Thanks for your patience.

No prob, Ace. I would, however, like you to include a photo of John.
Also, is this converstion we're having allowed to be viewed by others?
Hope not! Any & all info appreciated. I would be willing to pay more
for full articles. (Not summaries) Thanks.

Hi, nicki52!

I apologize for the delay. After being out-of-state for a week, I
returned to start college again, more than 15 years after receiving my
Bachelor's Degree. Needless to say, the last week has been a real...
uh, adventure. :)

I was not able to find a huge amount of material at the Reading
Library. As you discovered, their archive of the Reading Eagle is
microfiche-only and is not indexed (electronically or otherwise).

Here's what I did find:

On Saturday, July 12, 1997, an entry in the "Police Log" of the
Reading Eagle states:
"John Leidy Jr., 46, of the 900 block of North Front Street was
committed to Berks County Prison in lieu of $50,000 bail after
arraignment on charges of indecent exposure, indecent assault, and
related morals offenses. City juvenile investigators said he assaulted
two 9-year-old girls in his residence Wednesday [July 9, 1997]."

On Tuesday, July 15, 1997, an article appeared in the Reading Eagle
entitled "Inmate's death is investigated":
"from our news staff:
State police and the Berks County coroner's office are investigating
after a 46-year-old city man was found dead Monday morning in his
county prison cell."

The article adds some more details, then ends by saying,
"...Prison officials said Leidy was transferred from the quarantine /
classification housing unit to the medical unit two days after his
incarceration. Officials wouldn't comment on the reason for the
transfer.
An autopsy was scheduled for today in Reading Hospital by forensic
pathologist Dr. Neil A. Hoffman."

Although I checked every issue of the Reading Eagle from July 9, 1997,
through July 31, 1997, I did not find any other information. I did
notice a couple of other, more lengthy articles concerning two other
people facing similar accusations. However, these people were in the
trial phase of their legal proceedings. It is possible that no more
was reported at this time for Mr. Leidy simply because it was so early
in the legal process. Since newspapers try to protect the identity and
privacy of the alleged minor victims, it is also possible that the
decision was made to not to dig into the issue any deeper, since
prosecution was no longer possible.

In addition, there was no obituary published in this paper. The
librarian at the Reference desk told me that Obituaries are only
published in the Eagle if the family requests it. It is likely that
the family chose not to do so, to try to maintain some privacy under
the circumstances.

A very short article was published in the Allentown Morning Call on
Wednesday, July 16, 1997. This article was on Lexis-Nexis, and I
purchased the right to view it using part of your fee. I have
attempted to save the link for you; I do not know if it will work for
you, or if you would have to be logged on with my username to view it.
http://makeashorterlink.com/?H21556043

The interesting thing about this article is that it says "John P.
Leidy Jr. died of natural causes". Unless Mr. Leidy had a heart or
other serious health condition which was exacerbated by the stress of
his situation, I am somewhat skeptical about the truth of this
statement.

Finally, I found a fairly substantial obituary for Mr. Leidy published
in Princeton University's Alumni magazine, the "Princeton Alumni
Weekly":
"John Philip Leidy Jr. '72
John died July 14, 1997. He was born in Reading, Pa., Nov. 29, 1950...
John entered Princeton in 1968... John worked in the international
banking department of Midlantic Bank. After several years John
returned to school and earned an MBA in finance and marketing from
Columbia U. John then worked in the corporate finance department of
CBS in NYC. Several years later John was recruited by General
Motors... John was also a member of the Coast Guard Reserve Auxiliary.
While he retired, John worked as a volunteer disaster relief for the
Red Cross."
http://www.princeton.edu/~paw/memorials/memorials_1970s/memorials_1972.html

I have packaged hardcopies of all this information into an envelope to
be mailed to the Editors at Google Answers in Mountain View, CA, with
the request that they forward it to you, since it would be a copyright
violation for me to publish everything here in its entirety.

While I am not able to request a copy of the autopsy or the death
certificate, John's sister would be able to do so if she wishes; proof
of her identity would be required.

The death certificate can be obtained by sending $3.00 to:
State of Pennsylvania
Division of Vital Records
101 South Mercer Street, Room 401
PO Box 1528
New Castle, PA 16101

Or it can be ordered online or by fax, for $10.00.

See this page for ordering instructions:
http://webserver.health.state.pa.us/health/cwp/view.asp?a=168&Q=202275

The autopsy report (written by Dr. Neil A. Hoffman) can be obtained
from:
Reading Hospital and Medical Center
Sixth Avenue and Spruce Street
West Reading, PA 19611

The researcher did a good job in answering a complex question. I
would have liked to have seen a picture of the person I was inquiring
about, but perhaps a picture was not available, All in all, a
thorough job to my question.
