This was a challenging question, but as it turns out, there is an
enormous amount of information available about compensation levels at
not-for-profit organizations such as Underwriters Laboratories. As
made clear by the title of an article at:
http://www.smartpros.com/x31902.xml
Exposing Salaries: A Not-for-Profit Dilemma
recent law requires reporting of executive salaries, and the reports
are publicly available. Specifically, the article states:
"Tax Code Section 6033 mandates that the salaries of a not-for-profit
organization's officers, directors or trustees be reported annually on
Form 990. Not surprisingly, the people who run not-for-profit
organizations dislike this reporting requirement with a passion --
especially now with the increased accessibility the public has to this
information."
Whether they like it or not, Form 990 for Underwriters Laboratory for
the year 2000 is publicly available at:
http://documents.guidestar.org/2000/361/892/2000-361892375-1-9.pdf
Schedule 13, Part V of the form lists all officers and trustees for
Underwriter Laboratories along with their salaries. I counted 18
executives listed, along with 16 trustees. For the sake of decorum, I
have not reproduced the information here, but I will mention that
total executive compensation in 2000 was precisely $4,340,323. Some
additional information is available on benefits as well. Go directly
to the link if you want to see the full picture in all its glory (you
will need Adobe Acrobat to read the pdf file--let me know if you need
assistance with this).
Another section of Form 990 -- Schedule A, Part I -- lists the
compensation of the 5 highest paid employees other than Officers,
Directors, Trustees, and includes information for the General Counsel,
Director of Executive Operations, and other similarly senior titles.
The 2000 Form 990 is the most recent one available on the web, and
includes CEO level information, though not for UL's new chief
executive, Loring W. Knoblauch. More current filings would (or soon
will) include this information, and are available directly from the
IRS, according to a FAQ on their website:

How can one get a copy of an organization's exemption application or
annual information return from the IRS?
"Generally, fax inquiries for the annual information return may be
directed to the EO Photocopy Unit in Ogden, Utah by dialing
1-801-775-8803. (This is not a toll-free number.) This request should
include the organization's name, complete address and Employer
Identification Number (E.I.N.)."
"Alternatively, a request for either the exemption application or the
annual information return may be mailed using the Form 4506-A ,
Request for Public Inspection or Copy of Exempt Organization IRS Form,
which may be mailed to: TE/GE Customer Service, P.O. Box 2508, Room
4010, Cincinnati, OH 45201, in the case of the exemption application;
and Internal Revenue Service Center, Ogden, UT 84201, in the case of
an annual information return."
If you want to go this route for more up to date information, UL's EIN
on their 2000 Form 990 is 36-1892375. But before you go through the
IRS you might want to simply call UL and ask -- since the data is
publicly available anyway, they might simply shrug their shoulders and
tell you what you want to know.
I hope this information meets your needs. I strive to give the best
answers
possible, but if you feel additional information is needed, please
post a "Request for Clarification" before rating this answer. |
