Question ID: 137162
How can three people work on the same machine and see the same screen,
while all three are using the computer remotely, perhpah only person
controls the machine. Currently using XP Pro but can get win 2000
server or any other software as required. I have read about citrix
and know about remote desktop in XP. One solution that has worked but
only occasionally is to use xp remote desktop and gotomypc at the same
time.

Hello,

I answered a similar question awhile back and recommended two
programs. One is free and I use on a daily basis to handle remote
servers in another location that I can't get to, and the other I've
used before, but is expensive and has other features like file
transfer and the like which you didn't mention. The original question
is linked below and I suggest you read that as well. VNC would be my
best suggestion as it's fast, powerful, and it weighs in at only
500kb. It's also free and easy to set up. You can set up listen
servers so that others can connect and see exactly what's represented
on the screen without being able to alter anything, or you can set up
multiple connections so that it's like everybody viewing the screen
were physically at the computer, each able to move the mouse around
and type. This program is also platform independent since it is a
remote terminal program, and works by taking pictures of the host
computer every fraction of a second or so and sending it to the
clients. So these three people can be on separate operating systems.
Also, built into this small program is a small web applet so that you
can just go to a webpage to participate in the experience without
using any viewer at all. Give it a look see, and if you need more
things such as file transfer and the like check out PC Anywhere.
Please refer to my other answer as said before for more information.
Thanks for your question.

This is great information. Can you confirm, however, if the realvnc
is as fast at xp remote desktop or citrix or anything else. Have you
personally tried the other methods?

Unfortunately I've never tried the products that you've mentioned. I
will say that VNC is optimized for 56k connections and flies on
broadband. PCAnywhere has the same response time / performance. Any
other questions I can help you with?
