Hello, 6035808:
I think you don't need a simple backup software, you need a backup
software which takes an snapshot of your OS partition and allows you
to recover it after a disaster (virus, crashes, etc). That way you can
do this:
-Install Windows 98 SE
-Install all your drivers, updates and all the default applications
you want
-Create an image of your hard disk
If you need to reinstall everything again, you will only need to
recover that image to get a working environment including drivers and
default applications.
Here is a list of some software you may want to try out:
Powerquest Drive Image ($69.95)
http://www.powerquest.com/driveimage/
"Reduce your risk by protecting your data with PowerQuest's Drive
Image 2002. You can quickly create hard drive images for backup to
protect your data. Drive Image 2002 easily enables you to restore your
data after a computer disaster or system upgrade. Using a familiar
Windows® interface you can create an exact copy of your entire hard
drive or partition in minutes onto a Zip®, Jaz®, CD-R/W, network
drive, or another partition. That way, when the inevitable virus or
system crash occurs, you will have an exact image of your drive
secured, ready to use."
Paragon Drive Backup ($39.95)
http://www.paragon-gmbh.com/f_db.htm
"It will take a lot of time to recover your system - re-install
operating system, application - in case of failure or virus attack.
Even application installation can affect your OS. The best way to
secure the system - backup everything including system information. Or
you can backup only system partition with OS installed. Backup can be
performed to the hard disk, to the removable media (ZIP, JAZ, LS120,
Sequest, CDROM), to the network."
Acronis True Image 6.0 (43.85 )
http://www.acronis.com/products/trueimage/
"Acronis True Image 6.0 is your ultimate data insurance policy! It
takes an exact image of your hard disk drive or separate partitions
for complete backup, and allows you to restore all of their contents,
including operating systems, programs, personal data and settings. In
the event of fatal software or hardware failure Acronis True Image
protects your data, even when ordinary file backup software does not
work."
Active@ Disk Image ($39.95)
http://www.disk-image.net/
"Active@ Disk Image is a DOS-based backup solution designed for
complete backup and restore the whole HDD as well as particular FAT /
NTFS partitions and logical drives. Unique feature is an ability to
open disk images and preview files and folders inside before image
restoration."
I recommend you the first one, it always worked for me ;-). I hope
this is what you were looking for and don't hesitate to request for
any clarification.

"How can I set up my Win 98 SE Operating system to SAVE to my Sony
CR-R/RW drive when I download patches, updates, programs from the web."
That was my question. All the other stuff about backing up was
clarification of what I have tried in the past. I have attempted the
various drive image programs but my question was not about backing up
but Saving to Disk.
When you down load stuff from the web you always have the option to
download to disk.(floppy) I want to know how to download directly to
CD/R or CD/RW Disk since most downloads are now too large to fit on a
floppy.

Hello:
First of all sorry, it seems I didn't understand very well what you
asked, in any case I would like to complete my answer even you have
already rated it so low.
-I think you want to enable your Win98 SE filesystem to save directly
to CD without using a recording software like Nero, isn't it?
-What prevents you from use Nero or another recording software?
-Would you like to use CD-RW, CD-R without closing sessions, or a
blank CD-R each time?
Bear in mind that the backup software you posted on your question were
file-only backup, not partition image backup and because you wanted to
reinstall Windows 98 SE with all updates, drivers and so on, I thought
my answer was more useful to you. With your method you will need to
reinstall everything each time:
-Reinstall Win98SE
-Reinstall updates
-Reinstall and configure drivers
-Reinstall applications
In any case, to allow your Win98 SE record directly to CD ROM, you can
buy Easy CD Creator
Easy CD Creator
http://www.roxio.com/en/products/ecdc/ecdcfeatures.jhtml
which provides DirectCD, a software that allows you to save your data
directly to CD-R or CD-RW without external interface, look at this FAQ
to know more:
DirectCD Frequently Asked Questions
http://www.roxio.com/en/products/ecdc/dcdfaqs.jhtml
Q. What is DirectCD?
A. Easy CD Creator 5 Platinum includes DirectCD - a powerful feature
that makes it easy to record data to CD or DVD. DirectCD allows your
CD or DVD recordable/rewritable or DVD drive to appear just like any
other drive volume. In other words, your drive handles files just like
a hard disk or floppy disk. Using Windows Explorer you can drag &
drop, rename, move or "delete" files and directories right on your
disc. You can use the "Save As" command in your spreadsheet, word
processor, or other application to save files directly to disc as
well.
I hope this time this is the answer you were looking for and apologies
for any inconvenience I caused you.
Regards.

From ROXIO FAQ you recommended. "Using Windows Explorer you can drag
& drop, rename, move or "delete" files and directories right on your
disc. You can use the "Save As" command in your spreadsheet, word
processor, or other application to save files directly to disc as
well." Does "other applications" include Internet Explorer?(IE5.5) If
so then you have answered my questions since I have Roxio CD Creator
included in Easy CD Creator 5 Platinum. My mistake was giving out too
much information. I should have just let it go with the SUBJECT: line
"Saving Directly to CD ROM".
Now that we have clarified my question and your answer is there
anyway that I can change my rating from 1 star to higher? (after I try
your solution)<G>

Hello, 6035808:
Yes, "other application" includes any other application you have,
including IE because DirectCD is integrated at filesystem level
allowing any software you use to save files directly to your recording
drive. I don't know if the rating can be changed, try my answer and if
you want to change the rating, request for support to google because
your rating is hurting my overall rating!!! ;-))

Dear Answers-support@google.com
When I originally asked my question #137326 the answer I got
back did not even come close to answering my question so I gave it a
one star. When I requested a clarification joseleon anwered back
right away and answered my question to my satisfaction. His answer
was right on and he even provided supporting documentation (A URL) so
is it possible to up his rating for my question to 5 Stars?
He only answered it incorrectly since I put to much verbage in my
question. I should have just asked the question and left it at that.
Instead I gave all the reasons that I wanted to Save directly to CD so
he interpreted that as my main question.
So I don't think he should be punished by having his overall rating
lowered because of my vebosity.
Thank you in advance for anything you can do about raising his rating
for question #137326

P.S. to joseleon. It works like a charm the only thing is that you
have to go through the format routine (in direct DC) even if you are
not formating a CD/R. No big deal since it just takes a second. But
once you do that when you download something and it ask you to Save to
disk you click on Yes and after the download you just save to which
ever Drive your CR/R is. I tried it on some drivers for my Diamond
Ultra Viper Card and a Program called Atom Time 98 and in both cases
it saved them to the CD. So now I will have a file of drivers that I
can use in the future. Hope they will change your rating. And I have
learned not to rate until I ask for a clarification.
Thank you in advance,

Hello:
Thanks for your clarification about the rating and I hope you will
use this service again, the researchers are doing a great job
providing as much professionality as needed to solve any kind of
problems you have. And don't worry if the rating cannot be changed,
this will make me also be more careful with questions like this and to
request for a clarification instead try to guess the customer's
whishes.
Regards and I hope to see you again ;-)
