I have had problems recently trying to get into my MSWord 2000. Whenever I try I get an "illegal operation" message with the following details: WINWORD caused an invalid page fault in module VBE6.DLL at 0187:6504eaf1. Registers: EAX=00000000 CS=0187 EIP=6504eaf1 EFLGS=00010206 EBX=023e40dc SS=018f ESP=0062ded4 EBP=0062e150 ECX=00000438 DS=018f ESI=023efc88 FS=4f87 EDX=024bfea0 ES=018f EDI=00000000 GS=0000 Bytes at CS:EIP: 89 1c b8 5f 5e 5b c2 08 00 83 ec 28 53 55 56 57 Stack dump: 00000000 0062e178 0062e60c 650376f9 0062e178 00000000 00000438 00000000 0062df28 6502f975 0062df00 00000000 0062df90 0062dfa8 0062df10 00000000 I have tried through system file checker to replace the file VBE6.dll as well as two others, VBACV10.dll and IMAGEMAP.exe that a "possible corrupt" message was found. I tried getting the latter two files off my WINDOWS98SE disk but they do not come up on a find search. I have also removed and reinstalled Office 2000 with no changes occuring. This all started happening after I removed Symantec System Works in order to install Winfax Pro, it would not allow and upgrade from Winfax basic so I reinstalled Norton without Winfax basic and then installed Winfax Pro separately. I don't know if there is any assosciation between these events but this problem started right after I did this. Strangely, the only way I can get into Word is if I scan something and send it to Word, then I have full access to files without any problems I would appreciate any info or advice on how to rectify this problem. Thank-you for your time, Al White |

Hi glazinguru-ga, It turns out that this problem could be associated with either Winfax or Norton Antivirus. The fact that you have both of these programs installed on your system means that one of them is definitely the culprit. A Microsoft Knowledge Base article (316033) completely documents this error, and you can access it from this link: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;en-us;316033& According to the article, there are four possible causes for receiving this message: 1. The WinFax template is installed on your computer. 2. Norton AntiVirus version 2000 or version 2001 is installed on your computer. 3. A template in your Office or Word start up folder causes the error. 4. The Vbe6.dll is corrupted or damaged. In order to resolve the problem, you need to do the following in order: To resolve this issue, use the following methods in the order in which they are presented. 1. Remove WinFax Template 2. Disable the Norton AntiVirus Officeav.dll Add-in 3. Determine Whether a Template Causes the Error 4. Remove Templates from the Startup Folder 5. Replace Vbe6.dll Having seen this specific error before, I suggest you try restarting and opening Word between each of the steps until the error messages stop appearing. Note that the above steps just describe what needs to be done - the full instructions on how to complete these steps are available from the article link provided above. If you have any problems understanding or applying the information above please feel free to post a clarification and I will respond in a timely manner.
