Hello -

There are an incredible number of programs nationwide. Are you
looking for a list of literally all of them? Or do you want examples?
I've started searching -- I can pragmatically give you a
comprehensive list on a state-by-state level. Do you want contact
information? Does a "List of spiritual communities and the mentally
ill" mean that you're looking for church-type/religious organizations
that deal with mental/spiritual illness? If you could clarify a bit,
I'd appreciate it... thanks!

Hi -

Thanks for your clarification.

Because ratings are entirely subjective, what do you want as a basis
for rating these institutions?

Hello, sparkie-ga,

I am very sympathetic toward your situation with your stepson.
Having lived with a schizophrenic brother for many years, and watching
my parents go through the steps to find the right treatment situation
for him, I can more than understand your desire to find a safe and
nurturing environment that will allow your stepson to receive the
proper medication for his illness under adequate supervision.

The residential treatment centers that will serve your stepson
properly will be “dual-diagnosis” facilities that have the ability to
treat both mental illness and mental retardation. Although your
stepson’s mental retardation is “mild,” as you say, it sounds as
though he is exhibiting some very classic symptoms associated with
mental illness. It is very important to find a facility that will
address both conditions. You will notice the dual-diagnosis listed in
the facility descriptions
as “Dual Diagnosis (MR/MI).”
It is also important that the facilities you consider serve the
needs of those with various levels of retardation, including mild
cases. Your stepson would probably not feel very comfortable in a
facility that works only with the severely retarded. Also, make sure
to check the age range of patients within the facility.

First, for an excellent article describing the coexistence of both
mental illness and mental retardation, read “Mental Illness in
Person’s with Mental Retardation,” By Steven Reiss, Ph.D., Director,
Nisonger Center UAP, Ohio State University. (Revised 1993) at
http://www.thearc.org/faqs/mimrqa.html
This article will give you a bit more confidence about how often
these two conditions coexist, and allow you to know that your are not
alone in dealing with your stepson’s problems. One fact I found
especially interesting: “Higher rates (of mental illness) are
associated with mild versus severe mental retardation.”
“Presently, a number of treatment sites and community-based programs
exist in some places, but are not universally available throughout the
United States. Finding appropriate services may require persistence.
For information on dual diagnosis services, parents may wish to
contact their local chapter of The Arc, a nearby University Affiliated
Program in Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities, or the
state Department of Mental Retardation and Developmental
Disabilities.”

Also read “Forgotten, the Other Dually-Diagnosed,” by Joseph Fodero,
Ed. D. at http://intotem.buffnet.net/mhw/30jf.html
“The mental health sector must be willing to recognize, understand,
and include in its advocacy agenda the common comorbidity of mental
retardation and mental illness. With the prevalence rates showing from
20 to 35 percent of persons with mental retardation have a mental
illness compared to 16 to 20 percent among the general population
(Stark 1989), this long neglected issue needs to be seriously
addressed.”

The ARC headquarters located in Texas is a first source for facility
recommendation. The ARC of Texas website is located at
http://www.thearcoftexas.org/ .
At the very least, I would imagine they would be one of the prime
resources to offer some excellent referrals for residential living
situations for your stepson, and would know which living situations
are within your financial means as well as highly regarded. Contact
numbers for ARC in Texas can be found at http://www.thearcoftexas.org/

(You will need to contact the Texas facility, as I could find little
information about age of clients or whether they deal with
dual-diagnosis patients.)

Northeast Texas Mental Health Mental Retardation Center

Administrative and Clinical Offices:
1C Oaklawn Center Texarkana, TX 75501 (903) 831-7585 (903) 831-3646
While the clinic clearly works with adults suffering from mental
illness, it is not clear from their website whether the also work with
mental-retarded adults, or just children. The facility appears to be
very comprehensive in it’s services for patients, and is clearly worth
a call.

I wanted to submit a partial answer to you concerning the Texas
facilities I have uncovered. I will continue to look for facilities in
other states and add the information in a clarification to my answer.
However, please let me know if there are any regions of the country
that you would not consider. In other words, would you prefer that
your stepson stay within driving distance so you can visit?

Let me know. I will continue to search this out for you. Don’t
despair. I have no doubt you will find the proper situation for your
stepson. Thank you for caring so much for him. Many parents simply
walk away from the situation. You are very special.

Sparkie-ga,

I have compiled some more resources for you, primarily from the Ancor
member sites. This time around, I have centered on facilities in
states that are near to Texas. Since it is very hard to find a rating
system for residential facilities, and since the dual-diagnosis of
Mental illness and Mental retardation is still quite new, I believe
the Ancor sites are the most reputable. It is possible to find some
very expensive treatment facilities around the country, but they are
usually not for long-term living situations.
Also, be aware when searching for Dual Diagnosis treatment
facilities, that the term normally refers to the dual treatment of
mental illness and substance abuse. Therefore, it is important to look
for the MI/MR treatment option.

Texas

Residents of Tarrant County, Texas
Mental Health Mental Retardation of Tarrant County
http://www.mhmrtc.org/AOA/
This looks like a very comprehensive treatment system. However, I
don’t know if you live within Tarrant county, or how long it would
take your son to become a resident of that county.

I have used medical online to access the ANCOR member sites in the
following states. Most of the treatment facilities listed have
Geographical limitations, and I am not sure if that means a person has
to be a resident of that county or state. I presume so, however.
Therefore, in lieu of mentioning them all to you, I will only
reference the facilities that do not mention geographical limitations.
However, that does not mean that the other facilities are definitely
closed to non-residents. You should feel free to call them.

You can also further your search by going to the ANCOR homepage, and
then doing a search by state. However, as I've said earlier, there is
quite a bit of overlap, and I find the "medical online" search to be
quicker and more detailed.
