Question ID: 137713
I have found out lately that my brother is a homosexual and I want to
help him to become a normal person.

how can I help him to become a normal male rather than a Homosexual?
where can I find a psychologist or physicians that I could consult
over the net to help with this problem?
Where else can I find help?
Is male homosexuality a physical problem or psychological problem?

Please answer by showing solutions and not by telling me that there is
nothing wrong of him being a homosexual.

Some info about him:
he is 27 years , married and father of a 3 years old boy.
- He is willing to seek help and become a normal person.
- He was abused sexually when he was a chilled.
- He lives in the Medal East.
- What I know so far that he is the receiving party (others practice
sex on him) I am not sure if he dose it back to them.

P.S. I am posting this question more than once to get help from more
than one person.

Hi! Thanks for the question.

Since your question states a specific goal to be achieved herein, we
shall concentrate on such objective and move away from the debate
about homosexuality being right or wrong. Since you and your brother
choose a heterosexual orientation for the latter, we shall concentrate
on attaining that goal.

The previous answers have already provided you with a great number of
resources on the nature of homosexuality. I will also present such
information on the discussion of the psychological and physical aspect
of homosexuality. But I will start to your most immediate need and
that is of getting help.

The National Association for Research and Therapy of Homosexuality or
NARTH should be one of your most important stops since it provides an
international referral service of licensed therapists for sexual
reorientation treatment. You could contact them and find therapy help
for your brother.

NARTH

Other possible organizations that could help in your objective are
listed and describes in the links below with pointers to their
individual websites. They are composed of scientific, religious and
non-sectarian groups.

I wish you success in working with these organizations.

In a more theoretical discussion I found the following articles. Most
of them were already mentioned in the sources cited by other
researchers. I will particularly point out some interesting tidbits
from the papers I found.

“There have been few systematic family studies of homosexuality; like
the twin studies, most are anecdotal. However, there are three worth
looking at. In 1981[36] and 1986,[37] Pillard presented the two
largest family studies to date. Both shared many subjects, again
mostly recruited through homophile newspapers. Homosexual men gave
information about their siblings whose sexual orientation was then
rated in four different ways. Some non-cooperative siblings were
included using second-hand evidence! A more serious problem is the
conflicting definitions of sexual orientation. An index case with a
Kinsey rating of 2 was classed as heterosexual; if he was a sibling,
he was apparently bisexual!”

“Homosexuality - the causes...”

The next article is from a website which promotes religious tolerance
on issues like these but it has a good list and summary of such
theories on causes of homosexuality.

“What causes sexual orientation?”
http://www.religioustolerance.org/hom_caus1.htm

The NARTH website also has literature resources and studies about the
issue. You might be interested in reading some of them.

NARTH has a large resource of papers pertaining to the cause of
homosexuality. You may read them through this link:

"Is Homosexuality Genetic?"
http://www.narth.com/menus/born.html

“Frequently religion played a major role in motivating a client to
seek reorientation, Throckmorton notes, a fact that leads him to
caution mental health professionals against assuming that the
profession fully understands the potential and limitation for human
change. ‘For years, public and professional opinion of ex-gay
ministries have been influenced by anecdotes from persons not helped
by these ministries," he said. "Basing opinions on the experience of
only those who have not been helped gives an incomplete and therefore
inaccurate picture of the potential for alteration of human sexual
identity.’”

“Gay-To-Straight Research Published In APA Journal”
http://www.narth.com/docs/throckarticle.html

In two more articles, two therapists articulate some of their
strategies in sexual reorientation therapy.

“The patient's success in this effort is directly related to his
acceptance and recognition of the various factors that have interfered
and continue to interfere with an adequate masculine self-image.
Therefore, the therapist guides the patient in revisiting the
significant situations of childhood, linking them up with past and
present feeling states, and labeling the patterns. Once this is
accomplished the groundwork is laid for leading the patient towards
masculinization. Laying the groundwork involves using the patient's
personal history to demonstrate how childhood situations left him with
a sense of exclusion from the ‘masculine club’ and produced deep
feelings of ‘not measuring up.’”

“The Treatment of Ego-Dystonic Homosexuality: The Development of a
Masculine Self-Image”
http://www.narth.com/docs/richfield.html

The vice president of NARTH uses a technique called “gender-
affirmative therapy" for his clients.

Interpersonal Approach”

Hello redosam-ga

The physical problem (genetic/biological) Vs psychological
(environmental) is continuosly debated. 'Nature Vs Nuture'

From reading, it appears that bisexuals are have a higher level of
success in sexual conversion to a heterosexual status than
homosexuals. So that point is optimistic, though bisexuals want to
experience sexual relations with both sexes and are more experimental
by nature.

This question and answer from Google Answers
'Environmental homosexuality' by lot-ga 19 Aug 2002 answers.google.com

may throw some light in your understanding of the matter.

Presumably your brother is fluent in English for online resources?
Though I would probably suggest he seek advice from local sources in
the Middle East as a personal consultation is more engaging (and in
turn more influential) than distance communications with a non native
person.
If you were to help him directly, he may not be completely open to you
(for fear of embarassment.) People are generally more open to
strangers who are not in contact with their social circles.

Kind regards
lot-ga

Hello

The solutions you are looking for could be reparative or conversion
therapies, a search strategy to start off - Google search string
of:homosexual reparative OR reparation OR conversion therapy OR
therapies consultant
://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=ISO-8859-1&c2coff=1&q=homosexual+reparative+OR+reparation+OR+conversion+therapy+OR+therapies+consultant
This research could be targeted to Middle Eastern therapy, and
depending on your brother's religion or scientific stance fine tuned
to an appropriate religious or scientific approach.

Unfortunately I don't have much time on my hands to go into detail, so
I have posted a comment instead.

kind regards

This is very helpful. Because I too am gay. I believe that there are
influences in my life that led up to this. I can even remember
changes in thought pattern and i could tell that I my thought pattern
could led up to my becoming gay; however at the time, because i was
young, it was only theory and i largely ignored it. I grew up in a
semi-abusive household that eventually became very abusive. I longed
for parental attention which i never received and is still very
evident in my inner self. I never got over it. Being able to trace
back into my past would be very helpful to me.

Oh, i would also like to add that studies show that not all gays grew
up in abusive households. So this may or may not help your brother.
but it certainly sounds like it might help me. Thanks.
