Hello jish-ga, I have found confirmation that Gramercy Park Day is the first Saturday in May. In an article published on May 12, 2002, the writer explains that he strolled through the park on Gramercy Park Day -- which he says is actually four hours --"a week ago yesterday". "Behind bars", by Mitch Broder (May 12, 2002) ["a week ago yesterday" appears in 5th paragraph] The Journal News http://www.thejournalnews.com/newsroom/051202/mitch12.html This means that Gramercy Park Day occurred on May 4, 2002. If you consult a 2002 calendar, you will see that this was the first Saturday in May. The article cited by markj-ga was written in 2001. Thus, the Journal News article indicates that Gramercy Park Day remained the first Saturday in May in 2002. If you want to confirm what day and hours Gramercy Park Day is in 2003 -- presumably May 3 -- you should contact the Gramercy Park Hotel at the number listed by nellie-bly-ga. - justaskscott-ga Search strategy: Searched for "Gramercy Park Day" on several search engines; found link to Journal News article on Ixquick ( http://www.ixquick.com/ ) |

jish -- One travel website indicates that the park is open to the public on the first Saturday in May but makes no mention of "Gramercy Park Day": CANOE: Travel http://www.canoe.ca/TravelUSA/newyork_010619-sun.html Since this site asserts that this is the *only* day that it is open, its information is inconsistent with the information at the link you provided, and I have reached a dead end in searching for a third source to provide corroboration for one or the other. Thus I am posting this a comment, not an answer. markj-ga |

Actually, what the site says is that Gramercy Park is CLOSED on those three days - in fact, it's now closed permanently and literally. The gates are shut and locked and only those who live there are allowed to enter. Regards; tutuzdad-ga |

Just a note from me the question asker: Thanks markj for the info, that may very well be it. I appreciate you making it a comment and not an answer, doesn't look for sure. tutuzdad, I think you need to reread everything. The gates are locked except 3 days or 1 day depending on what site you read. |

Regarding staying at the Gramercy Park hotel - we did that in 9/2000 and did not have an enjoyable stay. If your goal is to get into the park, then by all means stay at the hotel; otherwise you might want to look for other accommodations. |

Today is Gramercy Park Day (Saturday, May 3 -- the first Saturday in May). I walked by the park about 10 times between the hours of 10 AM - 2 PM and there was no special activity at the park, and the gates were locked as usual. I went to the front desk of the Gramercy Park Hotel and asked if they knew anything about this day, and they knew nothing about it. |

Okay, I have a bit more information concerning this year's Gramercy Park Day.. After speaking with the Gramercy Park Hotel's front desk people who could provide me no assistance, I decided just to ask an artist who was sitting outside the park painting. She has lived around the park a while, and believed that the Gramercy Park Board postponed (for some reason) Gramercy Park Day to another Saturday in May. She said that when the date approached, they would put up signs to notify the public. I'll put it on here if I can find out an exact date, since I go by the park basically every day. |

And a bit more searching yielded this page, it doesn't have much information but it has great pictures of what you may expect some Saturday this May: http://emko.rockin.net/may4/ |

I wasn't able to go this Saturday, was anyone able to see if May 10 was Gramercy Park Day? I have an inkling, however, that next Saturday, May 17, will be the day, because it's also the day the New York City Gramercy Park Street Fair will be hosted on Park Avenue South between 17th and 23rd Streets. (Perhaps that's why they postponed it this year from May 3rd). It would make sense to have it then...more people around to donate money to their fund. - igarvey |

Okay, I've *finally* received confirmation on Gramercy Park Day. I was walking by the park today when I saw a sign on the gates...Gramercy Park Day is THIS SATURDAY, May 31. I don't know why they messed up the structure of having it on the first Saturday of every May, but I have a feeling that it was the weather. (Every other Saturday this May had rain forecasted.) The hours for Gramercy Park Day this Saturday are 9:30 AM - 1:30 PM. Be there early, I guess. - igarvey |
