Greetings saregamapa-

Coenzyme Q10 is called ubiquinone because it is ubiquitous, meaning
“everywhere present”. CoQ10 is found in every living cell. CoQ10 is a
vital co-factor for supporting health—especially within the heart and
cardiovascular system. Research indicates that ten times more CoQ10 is
found in the heart than in any other part of the body, making the
heart especially vulnerable to CoQ10 deficiencies.

Technically, CoQ10 is referred to as “vitamin-like” substance or a
“co-factor” because it is produced naturally by the body. However,
some experts consider it as a vitamin, an essential nutrient needed by
all the cells in the body to sustain life.

To assist with the absorption of CoQ10, some have recommended taking
dry CoQ10 with some fat to enhance absorption—like taking it with a
little bit of peanut butter or olive oil. While most brands provide
poor to mediocre absorption, innovative formulation technologies have
been developed to enhance the bioavailability of CoQ10 by increasing
its water solubility.

This question of coQ10 absorption is the subject of ongoing research

The simple answer to your question is that current research strongly
indicates that CoQ10 in soft gel form is significantly more
bioavailable than the dry form. I found no reliable research
indicating that one brand was better than another. This is not to say
that one brand is not better but only that there does not appear to be
independent research to back such a claim. You will find several
brand names mentioned in the research cited below, and it would appear
that any of them would be reasonable choices. You might also look at
other soft gel forms of CoQ10 by using the new Froogle search engine
with the search term
"CoQ10 soft gel"

Here are references to studies demonstrating the efficacy of the soft
gel form:

"Twinsorb™ CoQ10 softgels are highly bioavailable form of CoQ10 that
has up to nine times the absorption rate of powder CoQ10 capsules. In
a published human clinical study in Australia, using a randomized
crossover format, healthy adults took two 50mg of powder CoQ10
capsules or Twinsorb CoQ10 softgels in the morning. Blood was drawn
before taking the supplement and at intervals up to 36 hours. Blood
serum CoQ10 levels were compared to the baseline levels. Peak
absorption for Twinsorb CoQ10 was 6.5 times higher than for powder
CoQ10, and total absorption over the 36 hour studies was 9.27 times
higher than the capsules of powder.(1) The softgels form is also easy
to swallow and dissolves quickly in the digestive system."

"Enter Changes with its "ultra-absorbable" Advanced CoQ10 in a
micelle-enclosed emulsion soft gelatin capsule. In a significant and
well-regarded double blind study, CoQ10 levels in the micelle-enclosed
emulsion soft gelatin capsule increased the overall amount of blood
stream (serum) CoQ10 by 927% over regular hard gel capsules."

Bioavailabilty
"Clinical tests performed in USANA's laboratories show that CoQuinone
30 delivers CoQ10 rapidly and in much higher quantities than from
solid formulations or from competitive liquid formulations.16 Making
CoQuinone 30 more bioavailable than other CoQ10 products.
CoQuinone 30 is laboratory tested, potency guaranteed. Meets USP
specifications for uniformity and disintegration."

"A recent study using human participants compared the new Q-Gel
technology to other dosage forms such as soft gels, tablets and
capsules. Softsules produced a six-fold increase in plasma CoQ10
levels over baseline. Results showed that Q-Gels provided 100%
dissolution and were up to 300% more bioavailable than other dosage
forms tested. This increased solubility is measured with USP23
methodology, which measures relative levels of hydrosolubility. These
results were presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Society
for Nutritional Sciences/Experimental Biology in 1997."

"CoQ10 is a fat soluble compound that is poorly absorbed. While some
suggest taking it with fats, and some companies have formulated wafers
of CoQ10 with essential fatty acids to improve absorption, the most
innovative dosage form is available through Tishcon Corp. Tishcon has
the exclusive worldwide rights to the BioSolv™ process that
dramatically reduces the particle size of CoQ10 and renders it
virtually water soluble (“hydrosoluble”). The BioSolv™ process is used
in Tishcon’s Q-GelŪ Coenzyme Q10, and is available to professionals
under the NutriMedika™ label. Human clinical trials published in peer
reviewed journals compared the absorption of Q-GelŪ with other dosage
forms, and the results indicate that Q-GelŪ is up to three times more
bioavailable than all the other products tested. This breakthrough
makes CoQ10 treatment more affordable and more effective. Patients
need to take less CoQ10 to obtain optimum blood levels. Compliance is
greater as patients experience the benefits in less time."

"The relative difference between these two groups proves that the
bioavailabiity of the Soft Gel CoQsol Formulation is 273% greater than
that of the two piece capsule dry CoQ10 formulation."

"Coenzyme Q10 is absorbed best with fat; therefore, lipid preparations
are better absorbed than the purified compound."

"According to a recent randomized, double blind placebo controlled
study, the Soft Gel Technologies' (SGTITM) patent pending product
CoQsol has an absorption (bioavailability) rate almost three times
higher than that of a dry Coenzymne Q10 formulation."

"The results of this study indicate that LiQ-10TM has increased
bioequivalence compared to the
reference product, but did not reach statistical significance. Q-NolTM
has increased bioavailability compared to the reference product
The current study shows that the new formulation (product B or Q-NolTM
) of coenzyme Q10, which contains the reduced form (ubiquinol), has
increased bioavailability compared tothe fully-solubilized reference
formulation."

Testing in dogs showed
"soft gelatin capsules containing water-miscible CoQ10 formulations B
(Q-GelŪ) and C (Q-Nol™) are superior to powder-filled formulations
with regard to their biopharmaceutical characteristics."
