Dear shirry55-ga; Thank you for allowing me an opportunity to answer your interesting question. I researched your question extensively and unfortunately I found nothing to indicate that anyone in the book is a recreation of an actual person by the name of ORVILLE PRUITT. If any character in the book resembles a real person by that name it is likely known only to the author. Unless other information surfaces from you to lead me to believe otherwise, I am convinced that there is no verifiable connection between any character in the original book and Orville Pruitt. Harold Bell Wright (1872 1944) was a minister who fell ill while traveling though the Ozark Mountains of Missouri in the late 1800s when he was taken in and cared for by a very colorful community of locals. Wright found their antics, their language and indeed their daily life quite amusing and made notes of their activities that he later published in the form of the book SHEPHERD OF THE HILLS. Wright was a Best Selling American Author 1903 1942 and was the first American writer to sell 1 million copies of a single title book (SHEPHERD OF THE HILLS would eventually become the 4th most widely read book in American publishing history). I hope you find that that my research exceeds your expectations. If you have any questions about my research please post a clarification request prior to rating the answer. I welcome your rating and your final comments and I look forward to working with you again in the near future. Thank you for bringing your question to us. A list of some of the "real life" characters from Shepherd of the Hills can be found at http://www.republic.k12.mo.us/highschool/teachers/kstephen/oz8c.htm Unfortunately, it does not include Orville Pruitt. A current member of the cast of the local production of Shepherd of the Hills is named Judy Pruitt. http://www.theshepherdofthehills.com/cast2.htm Perhaps you could learn more by contacting the theater company. The following publications should answer your question beyond a doubt. I believe that you will find, in referring to these references, that my original answer was indeed correct: "Dr. Joyce Kinkead on 'The Shepherd of The Hills'" Copyright Joyce Kinkead, 1979. http://www.hbw.addr.com/kinkshep.htm "For further details on the characters and their true counterparts, see Carla Roberts and Diana Foremen, "From Hills to Hotels," Bittersweet, 4 No. 4 (1977), 46-61, and J. K. Ross, "Old Matt's View of It," White River Valley Historical Quarterly, 5, No. 7 (1975), 9-18." Good luck; tutuzdad-ga |
