Can you provide a list of Universites that offer an online course in
Spanish I (beginning Spanish) for college credit in Spring 2003? The
universities should not be "virtual only", that is, they should be
actual physical universities that offer some distance education
courses.

Is there a particular school or region of the country you would prefer
the school to be in? Will distance learning from community colleges
fit into your requirements?

there are no geographic restrictions (provided the course is entirely
online). My preference is for more "recognizable" universities (i.e.,
top 50 US Universities) first, but any (including community colleges)
that offer fully accredited college units are acceptable. Also not
necessary but preferred are courses emphasizing the dialect/cultures
of Spain or South America (instead of Central America) -- thanks.

Hello tadams-ga,

This was a tougher search than I expected. It seems that there are
lots of Spanish language courses online but finding a Spanish I class
available in Spring 2003 was difficult because many programs offer
Spanish I or 101 in the fall and only offer the continuation course or
Spanish II or 102 in the spring. It also appears that some online
courses are only available to students who are enrolled full time in
the particular institution. I’ve found some courses that meet your
requirements. I think you could locate additional courses by searching
the online catalogs of specific colleges/universities or state or
regional systems. I’ve also included a couple of Spanish language
resource sites for general exploration. Please ask for clarification
on any of this.

Good luck with learning Spanish.

You might also try the University of Nevada, Reno, who has a
comprehensive distance learning department, and offer Spanish I, II,
III, and IV. You don't have to be enrolled as a student to take the
courses, you can enroll at any time, and can complete in as little as
two weeks per credit. You can visit their website at
http://www.dce.unr.edu/istudy/
Search for college courses. The Spanish courses also cover Spanish and
Latin American culutre.
Good luck!
