Have you tried to click the "horn" icon (near your clock) and make
sure that there are not check marks in the "mute" boxes?

Let me know if this works.

yes, i have tried this.

i am able to get sound into two different types of headphones but am
unable to get any sound from 3 different types of speakers.

yes, i triple checked each time i set up a new set of speakers. they
were plugged in. i got power. they were connected to each other.
they were connected to the same audio out socket on my computer sound
card that i obtained sound from the headphones.

two of the speakers systems did not have a subwoofer. they were
completely mute. the system with a subwoofer (this is going back a
week) had a growling very low frequency distortion which was
unacceptable. i returned these speakers and have since been unable to
get sound.

thanks,

dean

Since headphones and desktop speakers work in the same principle, i.e.
these are both speakers, it would be a good idea if you test your
speakers on another computer and see if they work properly. If not,
the speakers are the problem. If they work properly, the problem may
be in your soundcard.

Are the speakers you are using powered speakers? If they are
non-powered speakers, that could be the issue. Headphones require
significantly less power to produce sound than a pair of computer
speakers. Its possible that a pair of non-powered speakers plugged
into your sound card just aren't getting the "juice" they need, and
are producing very very soft sound.

The speakers are powered and I have evidence of the power...LED light
on, a pop sound with on/off switching. I only have the one computer
at home but have tried two different sets of speakers with the same
results. It has been suggested that I try these speakers on another
computer which will take me a couple days.

Hi deantully,

It appears to be a hardware issue.Try to resintall drivers.Could you
post details about O/s,soundcard make...Are you sure the external
speaker cables are not damaged and that the pins are correctly plugged
into the respective sockets. You probably need to visit a friend or
neighbour to confirm the situation of your speakers.More than 50%
chance it is an issue with your comp.

So ,happy cross checking.

Dont re-install drivers just yet. And dont go running around all over
the place. Here is something I would try. Quite Possibly you have 3D
surround sound setup on your PC, your headphones could handle it, but
maybe your speakers cant. Tinker with that option in your Volume
Control. If not, see if you have any other software running, like
Sound Blaster Audio and disable it through that. Also check to see how
many outputs you have in your soundcard and try them all (Im sure u
have but try after u tinker with the Surround Sound).
