Question ID: 138473
What were the first 10 .com domains registered? I know symbolics.com
(March 15, 1985) was the first .com domain to be registered, but what
were the next 9?

Just to clarify, I don't want the first 10 domains registered, I want
the first .COM domains registered. So, I don't want this list:

SYMBOLICS.COM, Symbolics Technology, 15th March 1985
BBN.COM, BBNCorporation, 24th April. 1985
CMU.EDU, Carnegie-Mellon University, 24th April 1985
PURDUE.EDU, Purdue University, 24th April 1985
RICE.EDU, Rice University, 24th April 1985
BERKELEY.EDU, University of California at Berkeley, 24th April 1985
UCLA.EDU University of California, Los Angeles 24th April 1985
RUTGERS.EDU, Rutgers University, 24th April 1985
MIT.EDU, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 23rd May 1985
THINK.COM, Thinking Machines Corporation, 24th May 1985

Hi Allan,

Following on from the comments section, I am posting a slightly more
comprehensive answer.

The First 6
===========

SYMBOLICS.COM 15-Mar-85
BBN.COM 24-Apr-85
THINK.COM 24-May-85
MCC.COM 11-Jul-85
DEC.COM 30-Sep-85
NORTHROP.COM 07-Nov-85
http://www.harbornet.com/ken/nicv2i03.txt

The Next 19
===========

XEROX.COM 9 Jan 86
SRI.COM 17 Jan 86
HP.COM 3 Mar 86
BELLCORE 5 Mar 86
SUN.COM 19 Mar 86
IBM.COM 19 Mar 86
TI.COM 24 Mar 86
INTEL.COM 25 Mar 86
ATT.COM 25 Apr 86
TEK.COM 8 May 86
GMR.COM 8 May 86
STARGATE 8 May 86
UB.COM 10 Jul 86
FMC.COM 10 Jul 86
ISC.COM 5 Aug 86
BELL-ATL.COM 5 Aug 86
GE.COM 5 Aug 86
GREBYN.COM 5 Aug 86
NSC.COM 5 Aug 86

The above 19 come from looking up the WHOIS records of each of the
registered dotcom domains as at 15-Dec-87:
http://www.mit.edu/afs/athena/reference/net-directory/domain-info/domain-info.txt

As aceresearcher-ga points out, many of the domain names that were
registered pre Dec 87 have more recent dates in their WHOIS records,
due to the name expiring temporarily. Otherwise, the list is probably
as accurate as anyone could compile.

Best wishes,
robertskelton-ga

This is about the best answer that could have been found without
access to the original InterNIC database. Thanks for a great job!!

It looks like that is the answer, or as close to it as anyone is going
to find :). My question now is, how do I handle payment, since two
researchers provided data?

allan,

I cannot verify that the domains I added are the next 5 after the
first 6.

I used my knowledge of the state of the computing industry and the
early players in the development of the Usenet/Internet/World Wide Web
to guess at some of the companies that I thought should be toward the
top of the list. (Surprisingly, apple.com's origination date is as
late as 19 Feb 87.)

If you look at robertskelton's link:
"All dotcoms as at 15-Dec-87
http://www.mit.edu/afs/athena/reference/net-directory/domain-info/domain-info.txt
"
you will see a list of the earliest registered dot.com domains.

If you go to Network Solutions' "whois" lookup page at
   http://www.networksolutions.com/cgi-bin/whois/whois
or to the "Better WhoIs" website at
   http://www.betterwhois.com
you can enter these domains to see what origination date they show.
However, some of these dates show as much later than 1987, because the
owner either let it expire and then reacquired it, or because it has
since been acquired by a different owner.

I believe that robertskelton may have provided you with the best
information there is available (at least without doing hours of
research), and I encourage you to ask him to post his Answer and claim
the fee.

Thank you for your consideration!

Robert,

That's a great answer, and about as good as could be expected :).
Incidentally, from the list you posted at
(http://www.mit.edu/afs/athena/reference/net-directory/domain-info/domain-info.txt)
I registered the domain SCVCS.COM. I don't really have a need for it,
but it is cool knowing that I have one of the first 160 or domains
registered :).

Thanks for a great answer!!
