Hello shoaib~

The original purpose of The Miss World Pageant was profit: In 1951
Eric Morely was managing the Lyceum Ballroom and when he heard the
Festival of Britain was being held just across the Thames River, he
decided he needed a way to draw the many Festival visitors to his
business. His answer was to host a beauty pageant in his
ballroom...and he billed it as hosting the most beautiful women in the
world. The pageant was successful (i.e., it brought in good revenue
for the ballroom), and so Morely continued it year after year.

Like most pageant's, however, today women participate for the money
*they* receive if they win--often used for financing an education,
starting a business, or some other notable effort. So one could say
the main purpose of the pageant today is to give award money or
scholarship.

A secondary purpose for the pageant is to raise money for charity: The
Miss World Pageant has raised 150 million pounds for children's
charities throughout the world.

Request for Answer Clarification by shoaib-ga on 16 Jan 2003 18:25 PST
Hello Kriswrite-ga and thanks for your answer but sorry for my delay
response because of my personal reasons. I am partially satisfied
with your answer but I want to mention here that those beauty queens
of the miss world beauty contest also sell their beauty for 'sex'.
Please provide 'clarification' of that statement? Many thanks for
that.

Hi again shoaib~

I'm not sure I completely understand your request for clarification.
Are you implying that the contestants literally prostitute themselves?
Or are you saying that the pageant is based upon looks and "sexiness,"
and therefore degrades the contestants to mere sex objects?

If you mean the latter, I would say that while the promoters of the
pageant certainly want to (and have always wanted to) stress the idea
that these are the most beautiful women in the world--therefore, be
sure to watch our pageant--the contestants probably do not have that
focus. Most pageant contestants are interested in furthering their
education, or pushing their career in modeling, acting, singing, etc.
In addition, while the promoters do their best to make these
contestants as attractive as possible, the contest isn't nearly as
exploitive of women as, say, most R-rated movies.

If you mean the first, I would say that it is *possible,* I suppose,
but I haven't seen any evidence to support the idea that the pageant
promoters are, essentially, pimps.

If you still have questions, or if I've misunderstood your request for
clarification, please don't hesitate for ask for further
clarification.

Maybe what you meant to ask was about the Miss UNIVERSE paegant. As,
since we already have the Miss World competition, why have a Miss
Universe? Do we know of any other beings outside of our planet???
