Dear colwalt,

My Fellow Researcher tisme has inadvertently misunderstood your
question. We are only forbidden to provide data on living individuals.
The persons you have in mind are obviously dead, so please simply
ignore tisme's comment.

Best regards,
Scriptor

It seems that I have found data on these two people, including years
of birth, where they lived when 6 or 7 years old, and names and some
information about their fathers. It seems that I also have
information about the church they attended and the area where they
lived as of 1923, and perhaps more information about Mr. Wood as well.

In order to confirm that these are the correct people, could you tell
me any more information you know about them or their families? I feel
pretty certain already, but some confirming information might help.

Would the information I have found be sufficient as an answer
(assuming that these are the correct people)?

After college the two wed, moved to Colorado. He was a preacher. Had a
son named Ledger. Sam died at a fairly young age and Lizzie remarried
a doctor by the name of Friedman.

It still seems very likely that I have information on their years
of birth, where they lived when 6 or 7 years old, and names and some
information about their fathers. The ages and places of residence
match up nicely with where and when they went to school, and no one
else comes close to matching that well.

But I don't think that the other information that I initially
mentioned is relevant; it probably relates to another couple or
family.

Would the information I've found that does appear to relate to these
people be sufficient for an answer?

Hello cowalt-ga,

The quick answer is that this is the data I have found:

"Samuel Wood"
FamilySearch
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/census/individual_record.asp?INDI_CODE=1880US%5F9720094%5F7

"Elizabeth Tyler"
FamilySearch
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/census/individual_record.asp?INDI_CODE=1880US%5F9715846%5F3

These pages contain more data than I originally realized. If you
click on "Household" at the upper right of each page, you will see
data about the father, mother, and siblings. Then you can click on
each name to view the data individually.

Now I will describe how my research led me to this information.

The tricky part of the research involved the first names "Samuelem"
and "Lizzie". Once that problem was overcome, everything seemed to
fall into place.

"Samuelem" is an unusual name in English. If you search for
"Samuelem" on Google, you'll see that it comes up as Latin, Polish,
and Czech forms of "Samuel". (For instance, there are Polish- and
Czech-language web sites that discuss films starring "Samuelem L.
Jacksonem".) I assume that you obtained the name "Samuelem Rawcliffe
Wood" from an official record, such as his diploma from Bucknell or
Chester Academy. Perhaps the record is partially or completely in
Latin; that would suggest that the name is also Latinized. The
phenomenon would be similar to the one described on the following
page, which mentions how Irish first names were sometimes Latinized
(and, incidentally, includes "Samuelem" as the Latin version of
"Samuel"):

"Re: [Y-IRL] Irish Christian Names" (Reprinted from an e-mail in the
Y-IRL@yahoogroups.com Group, by Krisiain, (Sep 13, 2002))
RootsWeb: Freepages
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~connolly/Ireland/irish_christian_names.html

As for "Lizzie", this is a more common name. However, it is more
likely to be a diminutive of "Elizabeth", rather than the official
name on a birth certificate.

The search engine at FamilySearch (
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp ) generally
accounts for the possibility of similar names by searching for the
variations too. However, for the 1880 U.S. Census, which is most
helpful in this case, you need to search for the first name
"Elizabeth", as well as Lizzie. This search engine also allows you to
search for events such as births during a particular year, plus or
minus a certain number of years, in a particular state.

Among other searches, I looked for Samuelem Wood and Lizzie or
Elizabeth Tyler by the dates of their birth and by location
(Pennsylvania). As you noted, Chester Academy and Upland Public
School were located in Pennsylvania -- and as you probably know,
Bucknell is also in Pennsylvania -- making it likely that they were
both born in Pennsylvania. (Incidentally, Upland and Chester are part
of the same area in Pennsylvania.)

"About the University"
Bucknell University
http://www.bucknell.edu/visitors/history.shtm

"Chester, PA Schools"
Old Chester
http://www.oldchesterpa.com/schools.htm

Since you list the graduation dates from high school as 1890 for
Samuelem Wood and 1891 for Lizzie Tyler, I figured that I should look
for birth dates of approximately 1873 or 1874, plus or minus five
years just to be on the safe side.

There are other persons with similar names that show up in the
searches. However, the persons I have found were not only born in
1873 and 1874 respectively -- a year apart, as with their high school
graduations -- they were also living (in 1880) in North Ward, Chester,
Delaware, Pennsylvania and Nether Providence, Delaware, Pennsylvania,
respectively. For Samuel Wood, a Chester address makes perfect sense,
in light of subsequent attendance at Chester Academy. For Elizabeth
Tyler, the address makes good sense too, since Upland is close to
Nether Providence, at least as measured by their present borders.

"Nether Providence"
Delaware County Courthouse and Government Center
http://www.co.delaware.pa.us/towns/municips/netherp.html

"Upland Borough"
Delaware County Courthouse and Government Center
http://www.co.delaware.pa.us/towns/municips/upland.html

No other persons with similar names and similar ages were recorded in
the 1880 U.S. Census (as reflected on FamilySearch) as living in this
vicinity.

I hope that this information is helpful.

Search terms used on Google:

samuelem
latinized samuelem samuel
bucknell
upland chester
"nether providence" pa
"nether providence township"

I searched on FamilySearch as indicated above.

I also browsed the Delaware County web site to find information on
Upland Borough.

I conducted many other searches on Google and FamilySearch, especially
for versions of the names of the two persons in question and for later
events than their births. However, the search terms I have mentioned
resulted in the web pages I have posted.
