Are you referring specifically to the types of containers used aboard
container ships, et. al.?

yes. I am planning to ship some furniture commercially and would like
to figure out how many table, chairs, benches, etc will fill a whole or
half container. Easier if I know the cubic capacity beforehand.
Thanks.

Dear pam169-ga,

As it happens, I have a close relative who used to be involved in the
container-shipping business, so I am able to confirm for you straight
away that the two standard sizes of containers are nominally 20' and
40' in length, respectively, and each also nominally 8' wide and high.

However, I've also located a site (
http://www.containex.com/gruppe.php3?gid=8 ) for a container
manufacturer which gives more detailed dimensions:

20' ISO shipping container (internal dimensions):

length: 587.70 cm = 19.28'
width: 233.00 cm = 7.64'
height: 236.50 cm = 7.75'

                    = 1141 cubic feet

40' ISO shipping container (internal dimensions):

length: 1204.00 cm = 39.50'
width: 233.00 cm = 7.64'
height: 236.00 cm = 7.74'

                    = 2236 cubic feet

In practice, differently manufactured containers will vary slightly in
size, but they won't vary far from the above numbers.

You may also be interested in - or amused by - the following site

If this answer isn't quite what you're looking for, please feel free
to request a clarification.

Hope this helps,

Here's a great link that has all the shipping container dimensions you
could imagine. Several types of shipping containers, so just click
