Does anyone know about an article that was suppose to have been
written in either Life or Look Magazine in their earlier editions about
the White Car Bar in San Patricio New Mexico? |

It seems that the "White Car Bar" is no longer in operation (I cannot
find it in San Patricio's business directory). Can you remember the
exact title of the article? Name of the author? Approximate date?
Picture in the cover? Could it be a magazine other than Life or Look?
Thanks,

Sorry butI should have mentioned the White Car Bar had been torn down
for many, many years. The story that I am was told was that all thru
the week the local residence would line the out side of the sidewalk
of the Bar with rocks then come Saturday night if a fight was started
they would go outside and throw their rocks at each other. In 1994 I
wrote the Lincoln Country Historical Society and they wrote back
numerous stories of the Bar and the rock fight was one of them. It
was told by a local resident, not from any article that any one knew
about. In the 50' my mother was the one that told me of the story.
In the 40's my step-father was part owner or had some type of interest
in the bar and I am pretty sure the article was written before then.
Thanks for all
your work, I hope the above helps. Pettycash-ga

Pettycash --
I've done the search using New Mexico and Life Magazine and found a
pair of likely articles before 1955. I'm going to try to verify those
for you, though it will involve a trip to another library.
Stay tuned . . . I should have some idea whether or not these two
articles are about San Patricio late on Wednesday.

There were two articles in Life (none in Look) listed under "New
Mexico" in the Reader's Guide between 1940 and 1965. Both are photo
essays and don't mention San Patricio:
"October in the Southwest," Oct. 30, 1950
"Land of Enchantment," Sept. 15, 1952
Often we researchers find that people were mistaken about what
publication articles appear in. There are several travel articles
(probably 6-10) on the state during that 25 year period in Holiday,
Travel and the Saturday Evening Post. If you have access to a good
central library with both the Reader's Guide and those magazines, that
might be another option.

Another possibility ~ New Mexico, Hondo Valley where San Patracio is
located or
Billy the Kid Country or Lincoln County. Again, thanks for your help.
It could have been another magazine, just going by what my mother
told me.

TO: Luciaphile.ga ~ Sorry, I never saw the article, it was something
that my mother told me about and the way that she told me was that it
was something that she heard, so she never saw the article either.

Hi Omnivorous.Ga ~ Funny that you should mention Peter Hurd as his son
Michael now lives at the ranch that his father Peter Hurd and his
mother Henriette
Wyeth Hurd use to live at in San Patricio. The Lincoln County
Historical
Society told me the same story about the rock fights and also
mentioned that Peter Hurd was supposed to have a painting, or photo of
the Bar. I faxed Michael Hurd a note asking him about it but never
received a reply. San Patricio is located in the Hondo Valley. It is
about 70 miles from Roswell, NM. Peter Hurd went to the New Mexico
Military Academy in Roswell so I assume that is one reason he knows
about and has an interest in the southwest. The dates that you
mentioned about Life Magazine are about right. Pettycash-ga

Pettycash --
There was one small gap of time for which we had not examined the Life
Magazine archives -- the period between the publication's founding on
Nov. 23, 1936 and July, 1939 when the Reader's Guide to Periodical
Literature began indexing the weekly photojournalism magazine. I did
that today.
Life's format is interesting in those early days, with the index in
the back of the magazine for the first 18 months or so. Life carried
a weekly feature called "Life Goes to a Party" that focused on how
people were living, rather than the news. I'd hoped to find the story
about San Patricio and the White Cat in that feature, which had topics
like:
"Life Goes to Rush Week at Ohio State University"
or
"Life Goes to a 1st Night on Broadway"
But no luck.
Your best source is probably the local historical society or library,
where people might have kept the article. Of course it's possible
that the article might have been in another magazine and the local
libraries would likely have it indexed or identified.
Best regards,
