Economically, politically and culturally, is Bavaria more like Yorkshire or more like Essex? And if not these, which county is it most similar to? |

I'm not sure but I belive that Bavaria is about the size of all of England, so the culture, ecconomics and politics likely vary almost as much as England. Bavaria has a smaller population and much of it is mountainous so the people tend to be isolated and have more of the culture of their grandparents than is usual in England. Ireland may be closer in this respect. But I am mostly guessing. I think Bavarians are mostly Catholics. Neil |

How about Cornwall? Not a separate country, but culturally quite distinct, strong sense of individuality, own dialect etc. |

I am from Germany and I always like to compare the Bavarians with the Scotts. I know Scottland is not a county of England but a country within the kingdom, but then Bavaria is a 'Land' (= state/country) of Germany and Bavaria is subdivided into many counties ('Landkreise') and like England or Scottland used to be it's own kingdom. The parallels I see between Scottland and Bavaria are these: - mountenous and rough climate - catholicism - strong dialect with a fondness for a rough down-to-earth sound (i.e. rolling R's) - more patriarchic than the rest of the nation - considered 'different' or identifiable in customs and clothing - kilts and lederhosen - higher fondness of beer than the rest of their respective nations I am sure there is more... - more patriarchic than the rest of the nation ???? I don't know where you got this from....I'm Scottish, and over here, the women definitely rule the roost, especially as head of the household, and especially when it comes to taking charge of family matters and finances. :) And I've never worn Lederhosen.....at least not while sober. Given a choice between these 2 very different counties, I would say Yorkshire... it's further north and very hilly with a strong local dialect. Ali |

Yes, Morgenlandfahrer, but the Scotts are neither the richest of the Britons, nor the most conservative politically. BTW - as a fellow German - hallo, and you could always join us in the Researcher's Forum (see the newsletter for details). |
