Shade sails (now becoming a popular garden / architectual feature)
always have curved edges, presumably to account for the tensioning of
the wire which runs along the edges, as well as overall tension across
the sail.
Is there a formula to work out the ideal curves/arcs needed, or other
practical way, if I wish
to make my own shade sails (triangular, rectangular or multi-sided)?
Are there any internet sites with more detail? |

Interesting Question, Barry
There would not be a formula. but possibly a computer program.
Your question is related to 'minimal surfaces' problem, which
can be solved, but it may require too much effort for this type of application.
Do you want info on that anyway?

Hedgie,
Thanks for the info. I do understand it and it makes sense, however
yes it would be too complicated to continue.
cheers

OK - we will let the question expire.
One simple way you may want to try,
particularly if you have kids, :-)
is to model your minimal surfaces by the soap bubbles.

We are neglecting gravity here, which I guess is good aproximation here.
good luck - and have fun.

Hedgie,
How do I pay at least some amount or tip you and rate you for your
initial effort? Although no definative answer was sought after your
clarification comments, I appreciate your effort and was satisfied
with the overview which was provided therefore should be rewarded.
After all, we all have to eat, pay bills and have fun!

Did you mean to address this to me, in regards to the research
involved in my comment, or was it correctly addressed to hedgie-ga?

Hi Barry
That is nice that you do appreciate our inital efforts.
It is not neccessary to pay anything, really.
We do have a community here, which includes
giving some freebies away, and that includes comments and these
requests
for clarifications.
Also no researcher is starving, I am pretty sure :-)
But, if your conscience would insist, one way would be to cancel
this question and post a new one, smaller price question(s) with
subject(s) like
for sublime-ga only
for hedgie-ga only
etc.
Best way is take this as PR effort and the way business is done
here,
and just think of the Google Answers next time you are wondering
about something. It was a neat idea and question.
