Hello rancrow:

Thanks for the interesting question. :-)

The "science" of getting your website listed on search engines (and
directories and other places of interest on the Internet) is a
constantly evolving one.

Because the information on requirements and "best practices" is always
shifting (for both the industry and the individual engines), many
webmasters choose to use a Submission Service to automate and optimize
the process for them.

There are many, many examples of this type of service provider out
there - offering everything from a bare-bones submission to site
optimization and re-submittal services. The best way to find out about
these companies is to do a Google search (as below) and then read
through the first dozen or so to find one that meets your needs and
budget. (The idea here is that if the company ranks well for the
following search, then they must know what they are doing...)

However, if you wish to go the DIY (do-it-yourself) route, there are
also several excellent sites that walk you through the steps of not
only submitting and refreshing your listings but also optimizing how
your website is laid out in order to maximize your positioning on the
various search engines. However, since the landscape is constantly
changing, I will point you at two great sites that frequently update
their information rather than try to list the steps for you here.

Search Engine Watch: Search Engine Submission Tips
URL: http://searchenginewatch.com/webmasters/
Description: This excellent, detailed set of pages walks you through
pretty much the entire process. Well worth a thorough read. Serch
Engine Watch is perhaps *the best* resource for all types of
information in this field.
Quote: "This section of Search Engine Watch (formerly called A
Webmaster's Guide To Search Engines) is primarily for webmasters, site
owners and web marketers. It covers search engine submission,
placement and marketing issues."

Pandia Search Engine Optimization: Search Engine Submissions &
Registration
URL: http://www.pandia.com/optimization/submit-site.html
Description: A very nice table on how to submit to the various
engines. Be sure to read the information at
http://www.pandia.com/optimization/submissions.html as well.

There is also software available that you can install on your machine
to help you in doing the submissions (and resubmittals) yourself. If
you go this route, please make sure that you find a program that
either automatically updates itself to keep up with the ever-changing
landscape, or at least comes out with new versions frequently. As
well, remember that just because a certain pragram may be inexpensive
(or free) - often you get what you pay for. A couple of candidate
programs to look at are:

SubmitWolf PRO

Dynamic Submission 2000

AddWeb Website Promoter

Whichever path you choose to submit and update your site, the key
factors are:

* Have patience: any search engines take days - if not weeks - to get
your webpage listed.
* Keep on top of the changing technology: whether through using a good
service, a good program, and/or consitent research at a reliable
site(s).

I hope that this information has been of help to you.
