Hi,
According to research by Representative Karen Thurman (D-FL) there
were "nearly 2,416 WWI war veterans currently living in the United
States" in February of this year. The Library of Congress is presently
trying to locate these surviving veterans to get their stories for the
Veterans History Project.

According to a Seattle Post-Intelligencer article from September 24,
1998, "About 4.7 million American men and 33,000 women served in the
military in WWI. Of those, an estimated 4,800 men and 370 women are
alive today, based on projections from the 1990 U.S. Census"
Here are a few more current veteran statistics from the Natrional
Cemetery Administration
"There are no known living veterans who participated in any war era
prior to WWI."
"The following is a list of the number of American participants and
living veterans in all conflicts after the Spanish-American War:"
Living

----------------- ------------ ---------
WWI 4,734,000 2,200
WWII 16,112,000 5,032,000
Korean Conflict 5,720,000 3,769,000

So, depending exactly when you ask the question, the answer will vary
somewhat but it appears to be just a bit over 2,000. I hope this
answer is helpful to you, thank you for writing us.
