Question ID: 139230
Where can I buy a complete set of Scientific American Magazine for the
years 1956 and 1957? I need all months both years. I have tried Ebay
and Alibris for more than a year and listed on book fetch to no avail.
These must not be bound volumes, be in good shape, and I would prefer
them not to be ex-library magazines.

HI there sheph7,

You know what, I JUST realized that you answered my comment below. I'm
really sorry about the delay. The Google Answers system doesn't alert
me when a comment appears, only a clarification. I just happen to be
perusing some older questions today and came to this one. And just in
time I see!

Ok, so you are interested in those back issues I mentioned? Great! Let
me work out the details today (since I see your question expires
Friday)and I'll post the information you need to make the contact as
soon as I get it.

Now, I see you were willing to pay $20 for a researcher to provide you
with the specific 2-years of back issues as you requested. I haven't
done that so why don't you revise your price to reflect whatever you
think the information I'm providing is worth to you. Then I'll post my
info as an answer.

You'll hear back from me today (Wed Feb 5, 2003) or tomorrow.

Hi there Sheph7,

Well, we’re barely squeaking in under the deadline of your question
expiring here. Talk about last minute!

Ok here’s what we have – The following issues in varying conditions.

1955 - Sep
1956 – Apr, May
1957 – Nov

1964 – Jan, Feb, Jul-Dec
1965 – Jan, Feb, Apr – Dec
1966 - Jan-Jun, Aug-Oct, Dec
1967 - Jan-Jun, Aug-Oct, Dec
1968 - Jan-Dec
1969 – Jan-Apr, Jul-Sep, Nov, Dec

1975 - Jan–Dec
1976 – Jan–Jul, Sep-Dec
1977 - Jan-Jun, Aug-Dec
1978 – Feb-Dec
1979 – Jan-Apr, Jun-Dec

Also, he has:

Hard-bound cumulative index from 48-78 - some mildew on the cover but
good inside.

The following special editions:

Human Ancestors - 79
Continents Adrift – 71
Comets – 81
Cosmology – 77
The Physics of Everyday Phenomena – 79
The Planets – 83
Nature and Nurture of Behavior – 72
The Minds Eye – 85
The Universe of Galaxies – 84
The laureates' Anthology, Vol I & II - 90,91.

Just so you understand, not all of these are in great shape. He has
gone through and “graded” them as to their condition. Some sets look
pretty good (those from the late 1960’s) some of the older ones have
torn covers or may have some water damage.

My job here is to put you in touch with him and leave the two of you
to sort out what you want and don’t want. As I mentioned before, he is
willing to give them to you just for the cost of shipping.

I have received his permission to post this email address for you to
correspond with him. His name is Mark.

DHMoynahan (at) aol.com

He is looking forward to working this out with you.

Thanks so much for your question. Even though you didn’t find exactly
what you came here for, I’m glad it worked out for you in the end.

Regards,

-K~

Hi,

I could only find the following issues, perhaps another researcher
will have more luck.

1956: 1,8,7,6,10
1957: 11,12

As a book and magazine collector, I would suggest that trying to find
already-bound issues of magazines that are *not* ex-library will be
quite difficult. Most magazine collectors will not bind old magazines
(fearing loss of value), so your best bet is to find magazines bound
originally--and mostly libraries do that :)

Hi Sheph,

Well, I half-jokingly sent my dad an email with your request, knowing
he never throws away ANYTHING.

Low and behold, he searched his basement and came up with this:

"... in the first box that I came to I found April and May 1956.
Also, all of 1964 and 1965. Also found the Sept 1955 cover -- the
rest of the mag must be in another box..."

He has more boxes to check, so if he comes across the rest of the
batch I'll let you know. Meanwhile, he says if you want those, you can
have them for the cost of shipping.

If you're interested let me know and I'll make it happen.

YES, knowledge_seeker I welcome any of the issues.
I am collecting these to complete a 50 year collection created by
combining my and my father's issues. Thanks much.
