Question ID: 139265
I have on my T23 Laptop - Appx 700-800 MHz Intel P3, 500 MB RAM, lots
of free diskspace. Windows 2000 Professional SP3, IE 5.5 SP2.

I have two problems with my IE. It was working fine until now. Now
what happened is:
1) In address bar, if I type "www.google.com", it takes hell lot of
time before it contacts the host & fetch the page. On other hand, if
I type "://www.google.com" it immediately contacts the server &
loads the page. Why it's not taking http as default protocol?

2) when I click on drop down arrow on address bar to see the past uRLs
I have visited, it takes about more than 30 secs to display. What
could be the problem? Has my Hard Drive suddenly became slow?

Thanks,

Have you tried defragmenting the hard drive? I doubt if the problem
is as simple as that, but if the problem indeed is a slow hard drive,
defragmenting might take care of the problem.

I haven't defrag my Harddrive yet. But I cleared the cache files & it
works like charm now!

But problem #1 still remains.

Go to Start -> Run, and type in services.msc and hit Enter.
In the console that opens, find 'DNS Client' in the window
on the right. Right-click on it and select Properties.
In about the middle of the dialog box that opens, where
it says 'Startup type' select 'manual' or 'disabled' in
the selection box. Either will work. Re-boot and you should
be in business. If so, let me know, and I'll post the answer
formally. If it doesn't work, let me know that, too, and
we can explore other possibilities.

Another thing you could do is use a "lighter" browser, such as Phoenix.
