Thank you for your question. As a former employee of a major telecom
hardware supplier, your question immediately caught my eye as I
remember when ethernet switches first came to market and I was curious
as to where my former employer, as well as other players, were
situated within that market.
According to a November 2002 Gartner Dataquest report, Cisco was the
leading manufacturer (in revenue) of ethernet switches for the 3rd
quarter of this year with a 72.9% marketshare as opposed to a 63%
marketshare for the 3rd quarter a year ago. Worldwide, 3rd quarter
revenue totaled almost $3 billion, which was a 1.3% increase over Q3
2001. Below is a breakdown of the 3Q2002 sales and comparisons with
3Q2001:

Here are some numbers regarding marketshare from past years:
In 1998, Cisco had 63 percent marketshare in modular ethernet switches
and over 50% market share in Fast Ethernet switches

I was unable to find specific numbers regarding market share, but I
was able to uncover specific, quarter-to-quarter growth numbers over
the last few years. It is almost a history lesson in the networking
hardware business to see some of the names:
