After searching for your request, I emailed a contact who responded
with an address of someone else to contact who in turn replied with
another contact to write to. :)
After all these messages, I  finally located the office which actually
holds such records as the one you are seeking. They gave me
information on how to go about getting the details (with a fee) of
your father's cemetary. Would this information be sufficient as an

I have found a way for you to locate your father's grave in Milton
Cemetery, Portsmouth UK.

The following are the responses I received to the queries I made while
researching your question.
The first contact I made with this query was to Memorials & Monuments

This was the reply I received: 
"We'd love to help you, but our site deals with memorials not graves
(except for a few with historical significance). I can only suggest
that you go to the Portsmouth City Council site
(www.portsmouth.gov.uk) and mail their help desk.

I then wrote to Portsmouth City Council http://www.portsmouth.gov.uk/
at their City Help Desk.
Email: general@portsmouthcc.gov.uk  
I received the following response:
"I'm sorry you're being sent from pillar to post with this enquiry,
but we don't have cemetery records here at Portsmouth Central Library.
You can find them at Portsmouth City Records Office, Museum Road,
Portsmouth Po1 2LJ  Tel: 023 9282 7261  Fax: 023 9287 5276  
www.portsmouthmuseums.co.uk  They should have Milton Cemetery records
from 1912 - 1990.
I'm sure they can help you find the information you need.

My request was then kindly forwarded by the Library to the City
Museums and Records Office. This is the email message I received:

"Your email to Portsmouth City Library has been passed to this office
for assistance. I can confirm that we hold the cemetery records for
the city ,including the records for Milton cemetery.
We offer a postal research service at a cost of 8.00 euro per half
hour, cheques should be made payable to Portsmouth City council and a
'snail mail' address would be helpful so that we can send any
photocopies etc."

You can contact the above address and give them the details of your
father's death. They will inform you of the procedure of their
research. I have no doubt that they will be able to locate the
cemetery for you.

You might wish to try ringing the Local Authority for advice, as they
will certainly own any communal graveyard he may be buried in, and may
know where records are kept. If he was buried in a churchyard then you
may have to try ringing individual churches in the areas where he
lived.
