Dear kalifornia182-ga;
Thank you for allowing me an opportunity to answer your interesting
question.
The answer to your question Is Lyla Harcott, an artist of Santa
Barbara, known for any artwork, paintings, from the 1940's? is no
but
"LYLA HARCOFF" is.
LYLA MARSHALL HARCOFF (aka LYLA VIVIAN MARSHALL) (1883-1956) was born
Lyla Vivian Marshall on October 6, 1883 near Layayette (possibly
Lafayette), Indiana. She graduated in 1904 as one of only eight women
in her Perdue class of 218 students. She went on to study at Art
Institute of Chicago and spent a year studying at Academie Moderne, in
Paris, France.
Heavily influenced by such masters as Matisse, Cézanne and the German
Expressionist Karl Hoffer (with whom she was also a professional
acquaintance) she brought her talent to Santa Barbara, California in
1927 where she opened a studio in Santa Barbaras El Paseo. In the
1930s, Harcoff established an artists' cooperative called first "The
Little Gallery" and later "The Balcony Gallery" that both sold and
rented works of art.

As you can see, Ms. Harcoff was quite active in the 1930s - 40s. In
the 1940s she moved her studio from El Paseo about a mile down the
road where she remodeled a horse barn so that it became a two-bedroom
house and studio. Over the door she hung a sign that read in Spanish
"Adios Caballos," which translates to English as "Goodbye Horses".
Harcoff died in 1956 but her home studio in Santa Barbara is still
maintained in it's original condition. I have included some links
below where her home, studio and artwork can be seen as well as photos
of the artist herself.
