Hi! Thanks for the question.

One very good resource to look for about career guidance is the
Occupational Outlook Handbook website by the US Department of Labor.
In terms of pursuing a career in animal service here are the suggested
courses and qualifications you will need.

“Some training programs are available for specific types of animal
caretakers, such as groomers, but formal training is usually not
necessary for entry-level positions. Animal trainers often need to
possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent.”

“… a marine mammal trainer usually needs a bachelor's degree in
biology, marine biology, animal science, psychology, zoology, or
related field, plus strong swimming skills and SCUBA certification. “

“Most pet groomers learn their trade by completing an informal
apprenticeship, usually lasting 6 to 10 weeks, under the guidance of
an experienced groomer. Prospective groomers may also attend one of
the 50 State-licensed grooming schools throughout the country, with
programs varying in length from 4 to 18 weeks.”

“The American Boarding Kennels Association (ABKA) offers a 3-stage,
home-study program for individuals interested in pet care.”

“Some zoological parks may require their caretakers to have a
bachelor's degree in biology, animal science, or a related field.”

In terms of careers for Animal Humane treatments, the article states
that you cold get training from the American Humane Association and
the National Animal Control Association.

I also found this Animal Welfare Certificate Program in Canada. It is
for distance education so you could avail of it regardless of any
geographic concerns.

Veterinarians are also considered in the handbook and have their own
requirements to fulfill.

What about classes on criminology, law, evidence, investigation?
Would just a few courses help on a resume, or would i need to have a
degree in sociology?

Thank you for asking a clarification before making a rating. In
addition to the government website I have also searched other sites
and but could not find any authoritative source that says you need
such courses. However, as in other careers, it will be helpful to add
courses that could get a leg up on the competition especially with
these types of subjects. I have to admit such courses though with be
helpful especially in the animal shelter and humane treatment
services.

Thank you.
