Hi there
I am looking for a list of GlaxoSmithKlines global manufacturing
facilities/plants. I just completed a list for Genzyme and the answer
would look like this

USA
San Carlos	CA	Diagnostic test kits and reagents

If the product manufactured can be determined that would be a plus, if
not, not to worry.

Thanks

Hello Gill,

This is a complex one! GSK sometimes has more than one subsidiary
operating out of one location. For example, Stockley Park is
identified as a production location for Glaxo Operations UK Ltd and
also for Glaxo Wellcome UK Ltd. It is not clear whether they count
this as one unit or two. Also, the company reports, as available on
the GSK web site, list only the principal subsidiary undertakings and
only the headquarters. For example, production in Turkey is listed
under Istanbul, but in fact the actual plant is in Gebze. At least
this does indicate that production takes place in that country.
However, the whole sitution is very labile, because effects of the
merger are still having an influence, and a number of plants have been
or will be shut down.

I’ve hesitated for some time about whether to post this as an answer
or not, because it does not answer your query fully. However, I do
believe that this is as accurate and detailed a list as it is possible
to obtain from public sources.

How difficult will it be to locate these 99 sites?!

The total has gone up a little. These figures for manufacturing and
production from the GSK annual report for 2001 might help to target
searches a bit:

Antibiotics supply chain
This is a global organisation with 16 sites, spread across 10
countries.

Other actives supply chain
The active ingredients of non-antibiotic products are produced at ten
sites across the network, located in Australia, India, Ireland,
Singapore, the UK and the USA.

European region
There are 13 sites in the European region spread across seven
countries employing around 8,300 people in total. Between them the
European sites manufacture nearly all of the major pharmaceutical
products marketed globally by GlaxoSmithKline in a wide variety of
finished dosage forms.

North America region
There are three pharmaceutical sites in the North America region
located in Puerto Rico, Canada and the USA. These sites employ around
1,900 staff.

International region
The International region comprises 35 manufacturing sites in 19
countries spread across six distinct areas and employs around 8,300
people. There are five sites in Middle East/Africa, 17 sites spread
across the Asia Pacific area, four sites in China, two in Japan and
seven in Latin America.

Vaccines supply chain
Vaccine production is located principally at Rixensart, Belgium and at
Dresden, Germany. These sites employ around 2,500 staff. Vaccines
production operates as a separate network.

Consumer Healthcare supply chain
There are 30 Consumer Healthcare manufacturing sites spread across 17
countries, employing around 7,000 staff. The seven sites added as a
result of the January 2001 acquisition of Block Drug have been
incorporated into this supply organisation. The Consumer Healthcare
supply chain is diverse and includes the manufacturing and supply of
OTC medicines, Oral care, Nutritional healthcare and smoking cessation
products.

As part of the network rationalisation plan, production ceased in 2001
at sites in seven countries, including Hungary, Sri Lanka and Taiwan.
The disposal or closure of a further six sites were announced in the
year.

A list of national GSK web sites, which can be more or less helpful,
is available at http://www.gsk.com/worldwide.htm

NB, in addition to Rixensart and Dresden, there is a small facility at
Wavre, Belgium, which produces MMR vaccine.
