Dear smiley4214,
This is a very important update to my answer. The links I provided do
not work because the database they refer to changes the links, and
there is nothing one can do about it. But this does not make the
answer worthless. Please follow these links:
http://memory.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/r?ammem/detr:@FIELD(SUBJ+@band(+United+States++Maine++York++))
http://memory.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/r?ammem/detr:@FIELD(SUBJ+@band(+United+States++Maine++York+River++))
They should take you directly to the listings of the historic
photographs related to York, Main. There you will find all the photos
I chose.
In case those links do not work either, please use this link:
http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/detrquery.html
It will take you directly to the search form of the Library of
Congress' American Memory Collection. To find the historic photos of
York, Maine, simply enter the words "York" and "Maine" in the field
marked "Search Descriptive Information" and press the "Search" button.
As result, you should get links to the photos (please note that a
number of the photographs are not related to York, Maine).
I would like to apologize for the non-functional links and I hope this
helps.

Dear smiley4214,
Another, last update: The first to links in the clarification above
work. However, you need to copy and paste them into your browser
navigation field to use them - and please make sure that the two
brackets "))" at the end of each link are included!

Dear Dear smiley4214,
I found the technical problems with the links I provided so annoying
that I could not find any sleep. I searched a way to bypass these
problems so I can give you direct links to all the photographs I chose
to present you. And I found a way to do so: By using the links bewlow,
you will be taken directly to the picture files.
I hope this is, finally, a good way to access theose photographs. The
sources remain the same as in my original answer.

Dear smiley4214,
To get the high resolution photos, please follow these steps:
1. Follow this link to the Library of Congress' online photo
collection:
http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/detrquery.html
2. From the photographs you desire, please enter the description I
provided into the photo collection search field. For example, enter
"First parish church and town hall, York, Maine". (without the date!)
3. You will be shown search results matching your keywords. Klick on
the result you need (usually the very first one).
4. You will see a website with a small version of the photo and some
additional information. Click on the small photo.
5. You are taken to a website with a larger version of the photo.
Above the picture, there will be a link saying "Retrieve uncompressed
archival TIFF version (213 kilobytes)". Click this link!
6. You now see the hi-res version of the photograph. You can download
it to your hard disk by simply clicking the disk icon (2nd symbol on
the left).
Hope this helps!

I have followed your instructions for retrieving high-resolution
versions of the photos, but at step 5 all I get is an opportunity to
"download to my document", then "save as TIFF image document".. When I
retrieve the image from "my documents" I get a postage-stamp size
image which does not blow up to a hi-res image. There is something
missing here, and it may be my progam cannot handle this procedure.
What software do I need to accomplish this? Thanks for your help.

Dear smiley4214,
As it seems, your computer system has indeed not yet a viewer
necessary for viewing graphic files in TIFF-format. I recommend
downloading "AlternaTIFF", which you can obtain for free on this
website:
http://www.alternatiff.com/
It is available for use with Internet Explorer, Netscape, Opera, and
most other web browsers. With this component installed, you should be
able to view the pictures.
In case you want to edit the pictures for further use or save them in
formats other than TIFF, you will also need a graphics program capable
of opening and converting TIFF files. Since TIFF is a format mainly
used by digital photo professionals, you will hardly find such a
program as freeware. Personally, I recommend Micrografx Picture
Publisher or Corel Photo Paint, both of which are really affordable,
especially when you do not buy the most up-to-date versions.
I hope this solves your problems; thank you for your patience.
