Hello mikerps,

I am using Word XP myself, but phoned a friend to verify that these
instructions should work for Word 2000. If they do not work, please
let me know and I will further assist you.

I can understand your frusteration in trying to make this work.
Finding the answer to this was much harder than I had anticipated! I
find it surprising that there is no easier solution.

1) "Position your cursor on the page before the page you want to
renumber. Select Insert, Break from the menu bar. In the "Section
break types" list, check the "Next page" button and click OK. That
separates the previous pages from this new section of your document."
(see source for this step below.)
2) Click on 'Insert' and click 'Page Numbers...'
3) Change the Position to top or bottom of the page depending on where
you want the page numbers to show.
4) Click on 'Format'.
5) This is the Key Step. Where it says 'Page numbering' click on
'Start at:' and put in '1' to restart numbering. (This restarts
numbering at 1 for the new section that you created in step 1).

Source for steps 1:
WordPerfect 8.0 and Word 2000

I hope that this was quick enough for you. I tried to verify that I
have these instructions written clearly and that there were no
mistakes. If you run into any problems, let me know and I will be here
to further assist you immediately in the next hour or so.

Hello mikerps,

Please make sure that you are using the "Next Page" break on the page
BEFORE you want the pages to start renumbering. Then go to the page
where you want the renumbering to start. At the bottom it should say
Page X Sec 2.

Now click on 'Insert' and 'Page Numbers...'

Click on 'Format'.

Where it says 'Page Numbering' click on Start at and put 1 to restart
the numbering. If you click 'OK' twice, you should now see at the
bottom, Page 1, Sec 2.

well it was more obvious than that
it is the "show number on first page" dialog box
that needed to be "UNselected"

Great! I am glad that it is now working for you. I actually had that
step in the original instructions but wanted to keep it simple so I
removed it.

I guess that because you had already tried before that the first page
had a number on it. If you start a brand new document and want to
start numbering at page 8, all you have to do is put in a new break at
page 7 (for next page) and it will start the renumbering at page 8.
