I'm searching for an article titled "Noted Marriage Feasts of Spanish
California" by Mary M. Bowman. This was in the "Bowman Scrapbook"
which seems to be a 6-volume scrapbook of collected material. The
Bowman Scrapbook is in the Los Angeles Public Library, but the volume
that included "Noted Marriage Feasts" is missing. There seems to have
been only one copy of the "Bowman Scrapbook" but it is possible that
the "Noted Marriage Feasts" article was published somewhere else
before or after it was included in the Scrapbook.
A successfull answer will tell me where I can get my hands on a copy
of "Noted Marriage Feasts of Spanish California." I know this is a
long shot, but maybe I'll get lucky!

There is no answer at this time.

Fstokens --

Is there any chance that the "Bowman Scrapbook" would be available
from another library? Two options would make sense: check with you LA
Public Library to see if it is available on inter-library loan OR have
your librarian see if another library can forward a copy of the piece
"Noted Marriage Feasts."

Best regards,

I have contacted a historical society that might know about this work.
I will let you know if they provide any useful information.

I just thought of another historical society that might know about
this work, and I have contacted them as well.

I forgot to give you the response I received from the reference staff
of the California Historical Society:

"We have not been able to locate an article or publication entitled
'Noted Marriage Feasts of Spanish California,' by Mary M. Bowman, in
our collections. There is no catalog record in Melvyl (the union
catalog for the University of California and various other libraries
including CHS) for any book or pamphlet with that title, so I suspect
that it is an article. Also, no such article is listed in the index
to our quarterly, California History.

The best way to locate articles is by searching periodical indexes in
the relevant field. Two databases which index history periodicals
are:
America: History and Life (1964 - present) and Historical Abstracts,
(1969 - present). Both are published by ABC-CLIO. Our library does
not
subscribe to either of these databases, but many college, university,
and larger public libraries do. Many libraries, including the Los
Angeles Public Library, provide cardholders with database access via
the
web."

I assume, from the dates of her other work, that Mary M. Bowman would
have written this article much earlier than 1964 or 1969, so I imagine
that the second paragraph of advice will not help. But I thought I
would mention it anyway, just for your information.

I'll try to check in with the other historical society I contacted, to
find out if they have any information.

Thanks for the suggestion! My library subscribes to be "Historical
Abstracts" and "America: History and Life" but the article does not
seem to be listed in either of them.
