KM --

You might want to clarify this question: many authors have done "books
on tape" recordings of their works. Would you want those included?

Best regards,

How about William Joyce?

Better known as 'Lord Haw-Haw', he was the first international radio
celebrity by virtue of his propaganda broadcasts for Nazi Germany in
WW2.

He also wrote 'Twilight Over Ebgland'.

There are far too many authors who have made recordings for this
question to be answered meaningfully. Can you narrow down what you
mean, or what you are looking for? In addition to books on tape, many
authors used to appear on the radio, either in written-for-radio
stories or plays (H.G.Wells' "War of the Worlds" was originally a
radio broadcast, although I don't know if he recited it himself), and
the Library of Congress has at various times had poets make recordings
of themselves reading their works, for posterity. I wouldn't be
surprised if they have recordings of other kinds of writers
(novelists, non-fiction writers) as well. And if you include
recordings of lectures given by authors, then... You see what I mean
-- the list will go on and on and on.

You should definitely have a look at the BBC poetry 'Out Loud' site
which carries a couple of dozen poems read by their authors. The most
incredible is that they have Tennyson reading Charge of the Light
Brigade, recorded by him onto wax cylinders in 1890!

"Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them
Cannon in front of them
Volleyed and thundered;
Stormed at with shot and shell,
Boldly they rode and well,
Into the jaws of Death,
Into the mouth of Hell
Rode the six hundred."
