Hello

Nice to see you back!

"The Moonstone" by Wilkie Collins, written in 1868, is widely
considered to be the first detective novel.

Most English-speaking fans of mystery stories would consider that the
right answer but there are one or two extra points to note for
complete accuracy!
Perhaps "the Moonstone" should be called the first detective novel
written in English as there are competitors for the title of 'first
detective novel', principally the French novel "L'Affaire Lerouge"
(1866) by Emile Gaboriau.

literature."

Collins' 1860 novel "The Woman in White" is usually described as a
mystery novel rather than a detective novel, but I have seen it
described as the first detective novel. It all depends how you define
'detective novel' I guess.

"Murders in the Rue Morgue" (1841) by Edgar Allan Poe is usually said
to be the first detective *story* but it is not a full length novel.

But rest easy, "The Moonstone" is the usual answer to this question.

Please let me know if this needs any clarification.
