Outlook XP, Windows XP. New Gateway PC.

I use Outlook to retrieve POP3 email. Always have, never had this
problem before. I have set up the email accounts to have the password
stored. I have done this through Tools, Email Accounts.

Each time I open Outlook, it asks me for the passwords for my email
accounts. When I go into Tools, Email Accounts to change them, the
passwords are no longer stored. I enter them, finish the dialog box,
go back in, they're gone. Yes, the checkbox to store password is
checked.

I am sure this is a quick fix, and someone already has the answer in
their head.

Please help!

Thanks!

Hello, Lstein0-ga,

This is a known bug in Outlook 2002 (the version of Outlook that
ships with XP is known as Outlook 2002). The first thing to try
is to apply the latest Service Pack for Office XP. This
particular bug was supposedly fixed in Service Pack 1, though some
people still had problems. Here's the Microsoft Knowledge Base
article on the bug:

"301475 - OL2002: User Is Prompted for Password That Is Already
Saved"
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;301475

And here are instructions on how to obtain the latest Office XP
service pack:

"307841 - OFFXP: How to Obtain the Latest Office XP Service Pack"
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;307841

My advice would be to try applying the Service Pack(s) first, and
if that fails, take a look at the following Usenet posting. Note
that editing your registry can lead to big problems if you mess
up, so be careful! Here is a link to the complete thread on
Google Groups (article number two in the thread contains the
solution):

"Outlook 2002 does not save password for POP3 on exit"
http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&th=37fe1acd5868f095&rnum=1

And here's a direct link to the second article in the thread:

Thanks for the prompt answer. It seems like this would work, but I am
not able to download and install SP1. I get an error message telling
me that C;\config.msi\pta1.tmp has probably been updated, and this
download cannot continue. It's error number 1328.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

Good evening,

Here is an article in the MSKB which describes what seems to be
the same error. The file mentioned is different, but the error
number is the same, so I think it's worth a look:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q315152

If the article describes your situation (you have a non-retail
version of Office XP), then it may be time to try the solution
which involves editing the registry--assuming that you don't want
to purchase a retail version of Office.

If you have a retail version of Office, perhaps SP1 has already
been installed, and I would probably attempt to install SP2. You
can download it from here:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;325671

SP2 was also supposed to fix this problem, according to some of my
searching this morning.

If all else fails, and you have a CD-ROM with Office XP on it, you
might try uninstalling Office XP and re-installing it from the CD.
If you'd like to try that, and need assistance, I'll try to dig up
some info on it.

Google Search:
error downloading service pack 1328
://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=ISO-8859-1&q=error+downloading+service+pack+1328&btnG=Google+Search

Hope this helps,

Answer was great, obviously Bikerman put a lot of effort into it,
however, my computer from somewhere south of the border would not
follow these instructions. I ended up reformatting the hard drive.

Thanks for your efforts!
