Question ID: 141804
Is there information about Valerie Jorud, a sculptor working in Berlin
in the 1920s and 1930s in the Bontje Van Beeck workshop? I am
interested in any biographical details, particularly her death and
where she might be buried, and if any of her works are displayed and
where.

Dear ivan29,

Are you absolutely sure about the way the artist's name is spelled? I
found out that the workshop was actually owned by ceramics artist Jan
Bontjes van Beek, so your source might also have misspelled Valerie
Jorud's name. There is nothing at all about a person of the name
Valerie Jorud, so I find it possible that the spelling might be
incorrect. Could you please check if the name is really written this
way?

Best regards,
Scriptor

Ivan29-ga,

There seems to be very little available information on the web on this
artist, but at least I can give you the correct spelling of her name.
According to the one site I found that referenced her work, she is
"Valery" not "Valerie";

http://www.vancelations.com/Textile.htm

VALERY JORUD

Wall Hanging, circa 1935

Applique cotton ribbons on linen; design and manufacture Valery Jorud,
Berlin

H. 190 cm; w. 148 cm

Marked u.l. V

Inventory no. XII/9901; acquired from Valery Jorud at the Grassi Fair,
Leipzig, autumn 1935

"This piece from the first half of the 1930s is one of the few
examples in Germany showing a firm commitment to the principles of
design developed in the 1920s (geometrical, abstract), and seems today
to foreshadow the op art of the 1960s. Further works by V. Jorud are
in the Grassi Museum, Leipzig."

Unfortunately, neither the Grassi Museum, nor any of the other Textile
Museums I looked at, had a search function on their web site, so I
couldn't check any further than this. Perhaps some other researcher
can provide more in depth information, however.

Good luck.
