Rogers Hornsby was a famous baseball player and is in it's Hall of Fame. On Feb.29,1924, he married his 2nd wife, Mary Jeanette Pennington. She died June 1,1956 in St. Louis,MO. I need her birth details. She had previously married a man named John Hine, a salesman of automobile supplies. She was older than Hornsby, who himself was born Apr.27,1896. |

She told an enumerator in the 1930 census that she was 30, but given that she was prone to lying about her age, this is probably inaccurate. |

luciaphile,
You are so right. In Charles Alexander's bio on Hornsby, he
wrote, "Although she told Hornsby and everyone esle she was 23(1922),
George H. Williams, a prominent local attorney, subsequently reported
to Branch Rickey that, according to his information, "she is much
older than she claims to be--older than Hornsby, even, and is a tout
for Tony Foley's gambling place and has another married man on the
string and is strictly a woman of the town and out for money." Less
than a glowing endorsement. Anyway, Ancestry.com's 1930 census does
indeed give her age as 30, which proves that the census is only as
accurate as the people were honest. By the way, I am glad you look
in. I just raised the price on 3 of my old questions. I have emailed
the Alvin Ailey co. and Miya Silva of the DC Contemporary Dance
Theater, trying to get help on James Thurston. I'm also trying other
approaches every day to get other answers. If I get any matches on
stuff you helped on, I'll let you know. You've given good leads on
many questions and I'm still trying to convert them into matches, such
as Elmer E. Bates. Thanks again for continuing to look my stuff over,
