Hi. Could you tell me where to find background information on specific
attorneys? Specifically, whether they've been subject to any
disciplinary actions but also any general information concerning their
practice and experience. The attorney I'm researching is located in
California, in case that helps. Thanks!

Hello.

You can check a California attorney's membership status (and
discipline record, if any) on the State Bar of Califoria web site:
http://www.calsb.org/mm/sbmbrshp.htm

State Bar membership records typically include name, address,
telephone number, year admitted to the California Bar, law school,
undergraduate school, and discipline record.

A couple of legal directories may also be useful.
Martindale.com
http://www.martindale.com/xp/Martindale/Lawyer_Locator/Search_Lawyer_Locator/lawyer_search.xml
West's Legal Directory on findlaw.com
http://directory.findlaw.com/lawyer/lawyer_dir/search/jsp/name_search.jsp
Not all attorneys are listed in Martindale.com and West's Legal
Directory, however. And the amount of biographical information in the
listings varies greatly. Also be aware that the information in these
directories is often self-reported and is not necessarily subject to
verification.

Another way to find background information about the attorney is to
view any web sites that the attorney or his/her law firm has put up on
the web. Such web pages typically offer some biographical information
and details about practice areas. You'd find the attorney's web page
by doing a Google search on his/her name or the name of his/her firm.
In some cases, if the attorney lists an email address in his/her
California Bar record, you could figure out the URL for the attorney's
web site from that.

If the attorney is a member of a local bar association, that
organization may be able to provide some information as well. Here are
some of the larger one:
Alameda County
http://www.acbanet.org
Contra Costa County
http://www.cccba.org
Los Angeles
http://www.lacba.org/
Marin County
http://www.marinbar.org
Orange County
http://www.ocbar.org/
Sacramento County
http://www.sacbar.org/
San Francisco
http://www.sfbar.org/
San Mateo County
http://www.smcba.org
San Diego County
http://www.sdcba.org
Santa Clara County
http://www.sccba.com/
Sonoma County
http://www.sonomacountybar.org/

I hope this helps. Good luck with your research. If anything is
unclear or if you'd like more information about anything that I've
mentioned, please use the "request clarification" feature. Thanks.
