Question ID: 142430
My WinXP Home Edition SP1 (AMD900/256) crashes several times a day.
Blue screen white text.
At startup a warning appears "cd recording software causes instability
...".
Assuming that this is the cause for the crash my measures taken are:
WinOnCD deinstalled
Nero5 deinstalled
CloneCD4 deinstalled
Plextor 8/4/32 drive phyically removed

Still, same warning appears. In addition I exchanged my SDRAM, without
effekt.

Could you please help me putting my machine in a stable position?

Thanks, Erwin

Hi,

Could you please give us the entire error message?

unfortunately no print screen possibility at this break down
condition.

The message (in german) tells something about ... system halted ...
instability ... contact administrator ....
the only concrete message is a memory address HEX number (differing
each time) which seemed irrelevant to me

Hi,

By any chance did you happen to use Roxio (Adaptec) EasyCD Creator and
then uninstall it?

In deed, the warning message further mentions Roxio. Nevertheless I
did not install EasyCD creator (not htat I know).
Is there any chance to repair the registry in case of any EasyCD
creator driver left?

Hi,

According to WinOnCD official homepage at http://www.cequadrat.com/ ,
CeQuadrat, the CeQuadrat logo, Data OverSpan and WinOnCD are
trademarks of Roxio, Inc. Since you have previously installed WinOnCD,
you still have the outdated Roxio DLLs on your system.

Hi, many thanks!

I completed #7, #15, #17, I did not complete #19 and #20 as these
entries were not present. As a result when checking CD-driver
properties, the non-signated drivers cdr4_2k and cdralw2k previously
present were successfully removed.

However, still the same warning message - the one above cited by you.

Any further idea?

Clarification of Answer by bio-ga on 16 Jan 2003 15:06 PST
Hi,

The reason you don't have #19 and #20 is that you didn't install the
packet writer, or it has a different name for WinOnCD (named DirectCD
in EasyCD creator, should be something similar for WinOnCD).

Please be aware that upgrading the WinOnCD to the latest version (5.x)
solves your problem. I'm including this answer in case you don't want
to use WinOnCD for creating CDs anymore.

Every reported issue on the net suggests the same steps as in my
answer. Did you retry the same steps after rebooting? Some files or
registry entries may still exist in your computer. Please reapply the
steps in my answer again after rebooting.

There is at least one confirmed solution for WinOnCD, but I don't
think it is any different than the above. You may want to see it:

http://groups.google.com/groups?selm=7bae01c167c3%24e551ee00%24b1e62ecf%40tkmsftngxa04

------

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E9
65-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

hier finden Sie folgende Einträge vom Typ MULTI_SZ:
UpperFilters
LowerFilters

Diese beiden Einträge enthalten jeweils eine Liste der zu
verwendeten Treiber. Bitte nun innerhalb beider Einträge
die Zeichenketten CDRALW2K.SYS und CDR4_2K.SYS entfernen
(und nicht mehr!!). Wenn die Einträge danach leer sind,
kann man die beiden Einträge UpperFilters und
LowerFilters löschen.

Nun in folgendes Verzeichnis wechseln:
WinNT\System32\Drivers

und folgende Dateien löschen:
CDRALW2K.SYS
CDR4_2K.SYS

-------

Note: You already use a German version of Windows, hence I assume you
understand German. But for others, I'm including a Google translated
version too:

------
I had the same problem with WinOnCD 3.7 it replaces to you the
standard CDROM driver by a its own and does not cancel this change not
after a Deinstallation.

Remedy:
Start the system and announce you as administrator:
Start REGEDIT and change to the following key

HKEY LOCAL MACHINE\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

find you here the following entries of the type MULTI_SZ:

UpperFilters
LowerFilters

these two entries contain in each case a list of the too used drivers.
Please now within both entries the character strings CDRALW2K.SYS and
CDR4_2K.SYS remove (and no more!!). If the entries are empty
thereafter, one can delete the two entries UpperFilters and
LowerFilters.

Now into the following listing change:

WinNT\System32\Drivers and the following files delete:

CDRALW2K.SYS
CDR4_2K.SYS

starts again the Registry editor REGEDIT and looks for the following
entries:

CDRALW2K and CDR4_2K

request all references to these two files remove.

Remark: Some entries are not removable - they are removed however
automatically with the restart)

------

I know it's a bit strange, but understandable.

Please let me know if you solved the problem

Hi,

First of all, may I ask what is your WinOnCD version? Is it 3.8 or an
older one?

As I said in the previous clarification, there is another way to fix
the problem, which is to upgrade your WinOnCD version. You should
reinstall WinOnCD and apply the following XP compatibility patch at:

http://www.roxio.de/german/support/woc38_upxp.html
XP Wizard for WinOnCD 3.8 Power Edition SR2

This patch will only work if you have WinOnCD version 3.8. Previous
versions are reported to be incompatible with XP.

From the support page:

http://www.cequadrat.de/english/support/list_servicepacks_e.html
Note: This patch adds limited compatibility to WinOnCD 3.8 on Windows
XP.
Important: Roxio can neither warranty nor provide technical support
using WinOnCD 3.8 on Windows XP!

Clarification of Answer by bio-ga on 17 Jan 2003 14:40 PST
Addition:

Also, please re-check the registry for the keys. I'm pretty sure there
is some hidden key somewhere that blocks the OS from loading the
drivers. Check, for example, keys like:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\
or
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Services\

for Cdr4_2K and Cdralw2k

and remove any references.

currently there is no cdr software installed. I even deinstalled Nero5
and CloneCD4. I haven´t installed and will not install any version of
that WinOnCD.
As I said, after rescanning the registry no trace of CDRALW2K.SYS
CDR4_2K.SYS left.

Hi,

In the original question, you mentioned that you had WinOnCD
deinstalled. Can you please clarify what do you exactly mean by saying
you "haven´t installed and will not install any version of that
WinOnCD."? What version was it?

Thanks

Hi,

Although the Microsoft XP support site mentions only two of the
drivers to be removed, I have found at Nero site some other files that
may be related to WinOnCD:

http://www.ahead.de/en/content/helptool/139.htm

According to the page, you may also need to remove the following
drivers from your system:

ATAPIZER.VXD
C2APIX.VXD
C2REC.VXD
C2UDFFS.VXD
C2SCSI.MPD
C2UDFVSD.VXD
CDD2000.VXD
TOEXTNDR.VXD
UDF_200.VXD
UDF_920.VXD
UDF_JVC.VXD

These VXD files will most probably be in Windows\System\IOSUBSYS
folder, but you can always search your hard disk for these files.

Please find and rename the extensions of these files to something else
(.OLD for example).

Also please note that Roxio does not support WinOnCD 3.7 for XP. Their
limited support patch is only valid for WinOnCD version 3.8.

Hope this helps

Nero5 and CloneCD3 and 4.

Clarification of Answer by bio-ga on 22 Jan 2003 13:21 PST
Hi,

Please note that for a few years, Nero versions start with 5. Ahead
(Nero) and probably other manufacturers publish their support
documents according to the exact version numbers of their software.
Thus to be able to find the relevant support document, please include
the exact version of your products (for example Nero 5.5.8.4).

I believe CloneCD has also a similar versioning scheme (the latest
version, for example, is 4.0.1.10).

Hi,

I gave it a try, but I really could not find out the detailled version
number of software I do not have installed any more.

What I did:
using "msconfig" I deactivated everything step by step. It finally
turned out when deactivating <Plug&Play> under "Services" there was no
more error message. But deactivation of Plug&Play service turns the
machine useless. Is there any way to get some insight out of this?

Clarification of Answer by bio-ga on 26 Jan 2003 18:23 PST
Hi,

Plug and Play service is crucial for device manager, so I suggest you
to re-enable it.

Your problem of WinOnCD can be solved with the following support
documents from Microsoft and Roxio, please give them a try:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;314060

and

Hi,
Uninstalling your software might not be enough, because Windows XP
installs some cd recording software of its own.
I do not think it can be easily removed. So you should consider to
disable, if not uninstall, your CDWriter at least temporally (right
click on the "My Computer" icon, then "properties", select the tab
"Hardware", then "Device Manager", ...)

If this solves the problem try to reinstall your CDWriter with the
latest drivers.

Hope this helps ...

Hi,

Under the circumstances, you can either go for quite a complicated
'repair' function which is hard to explain in this remote way, or you
can choose to reinstall WINXP. One thing in this is that your data
will remain safe and only windows components will get replaced. The
problem seems to be deep-rooted and probably involves the MAPI client
which must have got corrupted by one of your CD-writing programs.

I run WinXP pro on my PC and have had to do this procedure a couple of
times without any loss of data. You should be sure not to answer any
dialog boxes with a 'yes' if it refers to formatting your hard drive
or any such. However a simple reinstall of windows overwrites the
present installation without even presenting any 'format' or any such
dialogs.

Do let me know if you need any help on this.

Some things to keep in mind:

Windows XP has built in a version of Roxio CD-Creator. Having so many
other cd burning programs installed can cause file corruption and
other problems, which may not be solved after uninstalling.

Suggestions:
reinstall. (including formatting your hard drive first. Make sure you
back up all you data first.)
don't install more then 1 or 2 extra cd burning programs. This will
help to avoid conflicts.
Subject: Re: WinXP blue screen crash
From: funkywizard-ga on 16 Jan 2003 03:30 PST

the biggest compatibility problem, and the one that most often causes
systems to crash is something known as a "packetwriter" which allows a
cd to be written one file at a time, and be accessed like a hard
drive. If you have more than one of these programs at any one time
installed on the computer, more than likely they will conflict and
cause the pc not to boot fully without crashing. Nero has one such
program known as "in cd" (i believe). Roxio (formerly adaptec) has one
such program called direc cd, though this name may be different in the
bundled winxp version. If you uninstalled your other cd burning
programs, these packet writing (sometimes called udf writers) programs
will be left behind as remnants anyway and it is important to remove
them. If this still doesn't work, a reinstall of windows is in order.

And when you decide to reinstall a cd burning program other than what
windows includes (i recommend nero, which you have already used before
it seems) make sure to tell the installer NOT to include this
additional packet writing software, and you should not have any
further problems.
