How can I detect the version of Windows Media Player that is installed on a user's browser? What I'm looking for is JavaScript code that works on (both Windows and Mac) IE, Netscape, and Mozilla, and returns the WMP version. I need to determine if the user has WMP 7 or 9 because the method of embedding each differs greatly (WMP 7 uses a plugin; WMP 9 uses a Java applet). Most code I've seen to detect the WMP version in IE uses OBJECT tags whose properties are checked by VBScript; and in Netscape, the plugins array is checked for various MIME types. A great exmaple of these can be found at <http://www.nwlink.com/~zachd/pss/detectwmp7.htm>. That code has a minor JavaScript error that makes displaying the WMP version fail under Netscape, but the detection code still works. This code will show a difference between WMP 7 and 9 when run in IE, but in Netscape both are reported as 7. How can the code be extended to detect 9 inside Netscape? |
