What are the rules and regulations for quoting parts of a book or
article? What kind of sources need to be mentioned?

It somewhat depends on the quote you are using. Can you give a
specific example of a quote, and where you want to use it? Thank you!

Thak you for your interest in answering the question. There quite a
few different articles, newspaper or magazines. There are a few qutes I
want to use from published books- research results, opinions of the
author. There are some published articles and websites I want to use
for reference,
In many books authors use bibliographies- did they need permission to
use those books as reference?
I hope this clarifies the question, if not let me know.

Hello:

Although it is easy to quote from a book or an article but at the same
time we have to be careful how we quote so as to give full credit to
the author. First let me answer your question and then I will answer
why do we have to be careful and What if you want to write the
original content in your own words or do a little changing.

Most of us use MLA style www.newark.ohio-state.edu/~osuwrite/mla.htm
of quoting whenever we want to quote from a book or an article. Take
the following example:

Suppose I want to quote some of the words from page 14 of the book
‘The Knowledge Principles’ written by Paul Hiwind. I will put the
original content between the “” signs and at the end provide a page
number.

According to Sir McArthur Lloyd, “People do not change overtimes but
the society in which they live”. (14).

At the end of my paper, I will cite the book and other information
from where the information was taken from. According to MLA style
(which most of us use), we will put

Author(s). Title of Book. Place of Publication: Publisher, Year of

Publication.

As mentioned the author of my book is Paul Hiwind, I will cite:

Hiwind, Paul. The Knowledge Principles. New York: Graham Publications,
1998.

Note that the author and the name of the book is imaginary in my
examples. Also note that whenever you cite, you should put the Last
Name first and First Name second. As in Hiwind, Paul. (Real name is
Paul Hiwind ).

The above example holds for any formal paper. Anyway, the purpose of
our quoting the source is to give credit to the author. Make sure that
you write the exact same words between quotation marks “”. Other
things you might take into account are stated in the following pages.

Principles and Rules for Quoting (Detailed)

Principles and Rules for Quoting (Short)

If you want to change the wordings or write in your own words than a
very detailed and easy to understand instructions are provided here:

Now if you are quoting in email or online forums, the following would
help:

Quoting an email message

Online Forum

Discussion Forum

Quoting from Emails

Email Quoting

News Group Quoting
http://www.xs4all.nl/~wijnands/nnq/nquote.html

Again there is nothing curious as long as you give credit to the
author. Please see

http://www.indiana.edu/~wts/wts/plagiarism.html if you write in your
own words or modify the original content.

Hope this will help. Please clarify if you are still confused. I will
be obliged to answer your inquiry. Thanks.

Sincerely,
Leader-ga
