Hi druid--

Can you put this quote in any kind of context, or tell us where the quiz appears?

Any additional information would be helpful.

Thank you.

It's a quiz of all wine-related questions appearing in 'Food&Wine'
magazine in Ireland.

Myself, and a group of other people have searched past issues, so we
don't think it's there. Also, basic web searches throw up nothing. The
quote is not specific enough to make a guess about the person.

My own guess is that it appears in some other magazine, newspaper or
book.

Best Wishes,

Druid

In response to the comments :

I had found the quoted article entry, but I believe the quotation is
an exact one - therefore I need that one. However, it is broad enough
in meaning to cover a huge range of possible people (probably
deliberately !).

The magazine covers wines from all world regions. The use of language
in the quote suggests to me that the speaker is a native-English
speaker - hence possibly indicating a New World winemaker.

Thanks for the efforts so far, but it just may not be available
online.

In reply to rico :

I think it's an exact quote - that would fit with the other questions.

I found this reference:
"Our appointment the next morning was at Bookwalter, situated west of
Pasco off of Route 182 (take exit 3). Of the wines poured, the
following stood out. The 1997 Chardonnay ($9) is clean and fresh,
offering true fruit flavors and a nice lingering finish. The 1995
Vintner's Select Chardonnay ($18) is a step above the '97 chard, with
buttery, leesy and viscous qualities wrapped in a nice oaky finish. Of
the reds, the 1994 Vintner's Select Cabernet Sauvignon ($38) shines,
with its rich, deep flavors. It's still a bit tannic at this point, so
consider it a distance runner, not a sprinter. Lay it down. The 1997
Riesling ($7) was a nice surprise. Weighing in at 4.5 percent residual
sugar, this is a rich, deep, smooth and beautifully spicy wine whose
finish you can time on a watch. Definite buy. "

I checked the Bookwalter winery homepage
(http://www.bookwalterwines.com/) and did a search on the terms
sprinter and marathon, but no hits. Nor any seraching for sprinter
bookwalter or marathon.

So could this "sprinter" "marathon" reference be current wine jargon?
I used to read the wine magazines but haven't for several years, and
I don't recall the reference.

Druid, does your Irish issue of Food&Wine concentrate mostly on
European wines or does it cover American to an equal extent?
Would some of the other questions in the quiz give us any clue to the
type of answer or source we might be looking for?

And, tar_heel, please tell me what did you search on to find that
quote?

Fwiw, I wonder whether it's a "trick" quote/question...

"THE SUNDAY SUN TORONTO - Gordon Stimmel 'One crucial visit is Semeli
Winery, just outside Athens, a bright beacon for Attica's sagging
wines. Here, in soil that absorbed the foot falls of the original
Marathon runner, is made one of Greece's most glorious reds, Chateau
Semeli... I rate the 1990 and 1992 among the top wines of the world.'"
