Question ID: 143266
I’m trying to configure a shared printer on Windows 2000 pro so that
it can be accessed from other client systems in a small workgroup that
are running Windows 98 and Windows 95. When these systems try to
access the shared resource on the Windows 2000 pro desktop, a dialog
box comes up and asks for a network password for the shared $IPC
resource. No passwords for current users will work, not even the
administrators password. All systems are on the same workgroup and can
access file and folder shares without any problems through the LAN so
there is not any networking issues, I’m assuming it’s has to do with
the security between Windows 2000 Pro and Windows 9x?
The “compatible workstation” security template was already applied to
the Windows 2000 Pro desktop.

Hello,

Please clarify on which computer the printer is on (what operating
system is it running?)

Are you using the file and printer sharing that comes with Windows
operating systems or are you using any third party applications to
share the printer?

Hi,

Can you clarify if you have any user accounts defined on the Windows 2000 system?

Thanks

To: tisme-ga, the question states in the very first sentance the
printer that is shared is on a Windows 2000 Pro and the clients
accessing the shared printer on the Windows 2000 pro system are using
Win95 and Win 98. I'm Using the "standard" file/print sharing built
into Windows 2000 Pro. The Windows 95 pro is using SP3 and all Win9x
systems are updated with all current security/system patches.

To: Bio-ga, There are identical user/password accounts on all systems,
this is a "workgroup"....

Could you tell me whether the "Guest" account is enabled or disabled
on the Windows 2000 machine?

Thanks,

To Cerebrate:
The default configuration on the Windows2000 Pro system has not been
changed, the GUEST account is disabled...

I wish people would READ the question completely before answering.. I
never said I was accessing the $IPC share, that is the error message I
am receiving.
As for your generic "cut and paste" responce.. once again... in the
original message it clearly states all other workgroup shares are
working just fine so standard file/print sharing procedures have been
followed including using IP addresses instead of NETBIOS names to
map/access shared resources.

The problem had been solved by Microsoft's Tech Net and was related to
a patch install that corrected some sharing issues with certian
printers.. thanks anyway.

simple, simple, simple...
Make sure you have created and user account on the Win2k PC (right
click My Computer, Manage, Users& Groups) that matches the logon name
you use on your win9x pc's else you won't be able to access anything
on the win2k box.

Wish it was that simple... that's the FIRST thing I checked, remember
I already stated that the "workgroup" is working with other shared
resourses on all systems... it's not a USER / PASSWORD / SECURITY
issue.. try again but thanks for the comment just the same..

You should not be trying to access the $IPC resource..that's just for
inter process communication.

On the Win2k computer, right click on the printer (in control panel,
inside the listing of printers) go to sharing, make sure you have it
as shared and also write down the share name (or set it to something
easy like "pshare1".) After this, go in to network connections in
control panel, right click on the LAN connection for your office
network, go to properties, make sure you have the file/print sharing
service installed.

Go to the 98 computer, run the add printer wizard, when given the
option, select "network printer", when given the chance, enter the
location "name" for the printer (instead of browing,) as "\\IP ADDRESS
OF WIN2K COMPUTER\pshare1" unless you have a different share name.
Make sure this is in quotes incase there's any spaces anywhere in the
name. ie if the IP address of the win2k computer is 192.168.0.1, and
the share name is pshare1, enter "\\192.168.0.1\pshare1" or simply the
computer name (which can be set in system properties, by right
clicking on my computer, going to properties, then selecting the
"computer name" tab.

Click on next to go through the add printer wizard, let it copy
files..and it should be set up.

Windows 95 does not have built-in support for print sharing.
