Here's a toughy - where can I find a list (names and contact info) of
"corporate card" marketing professionals, most of whom work for large
card-issuing companies like VISA, MasterCard, American Express, etc.
Titles I'm looking for could include Marketing Manager, Marketing
Director, and Product Manager. I am not looking for THE top marketing
people in the company...but rather people that have marketing
responsibility for corporate cards (experience with cards to
individual consumers is of little value to me.) There may be DOZENS
of these people at each of the larger companies. Publications or
websites that this group frequents would be of some value to me as
well...if you happen to know that too. Thanks!!

Are you expecting to have the names and contact info as your answer,
or do you just want to be directed to some sources where you could get
that type of contact information -- probably for a price!

I am only expecting to be directed to good SOURCES for this
information (name and phone (or emails).) Your ratings for answers
are impressive. Hopefully you'll be able to help with my question ;-)

Hi Sakauf,

You're right, you've laid a toughy on us, but I think I've nailed down
what you need.

As you surmised, there are dozens of people responsible for marketing
corporate cards for each organization. Something that might surprise
you is that these organizations are *not* the actual card issuers -
cards are issued by member banks belonging to the associations, which
set standards for issuance, data transmission, and authorization.
Simply put, Visa, MasterCard, are brand names, and member banks are
given permission to market their cards under these brand names.

To obtain the contact information for the marketing professionals, you
have to look to the member banks. Some organizations are less than
forthcoming with the information, however. Complete contact
information *is* available - at a price, assembled by a card industry
specialist.

Mastercard offers several types of corporate cards, issued by more
than a dozen member banks:

I've broken the contacts down by specific card. Each page gives the
full listing of the responsible marketing personnel:

MasterCard Corporate Multi CardŽ

MasterCard Corporate Purchasing CardŽ

MasterCard Travel Per Diem Card
http://www.mastercardbusiness.com/mcbiz/corporate/index.jsp?template=/corporate/issuers&content=travelPerdiemCard

Obtaining contact information for Visa Corporate Card marketing
personnel is much less straightforward - Visa is very guarded about
releasing any information at all. Though they offer business
products:

Visa - For business
http://www.international.visa.com/fb/main.jsp

...they buried their contact list for corporate cards! I did find it,
though:

Visa Corporate Cards
http://usa.visa.com/business/commercial/visa_corporate_apply.html?it=il_/business/commercial/commercial_cards_apply.html

For *truly* buried contact information, one need look no further than
the privately held American Express Company:

AMEX for Corporations
http://www.americanexpress.com/homepage/corporations.shtml

No mention of marketing personnel for Corporate Cards was made
anywhere on the site, nor was I able to find it in their 2001 Annual
Report.

I turned to the "Key People" listing for AMEX at Hoovers, and was
rewarded with a name:

President, Global Corporate Services, TRS: Edward P. Gilligan

This is the fella you need to get in touch with to get the marketing
personnel contact information. His e-mail is unlisted, however. To
contact him, you'll need to send snail mail or call the Headquarters
and ask for him:

American Express Company
World Financial Center, 200 Vesey St.
New York, NY 10285
Phone: 212-640-2000

Additional contact sources are available in directory form from
Thomson Media for $485. The final chapter of the book details contact
information for industry executives, including marketing personnel:

2003 Card Industry Directory
http://www.cardforum.com/cid_demos/chp-summaries.html#13

...and a searchable electronic version available in "modules" for $195
per module:

Card Source One
http://www.cardforum.com/html/csoord.shtml

Thomson Media also offers several card industry magazines and other
publications, including Card Marketing and Card Management. You can
learn more about these publications, sample them and/or subscribe at
CardForum:

Card Forum - The Electronic Resource for the Card Professional
http://www.cardforum.com/index.htm

I hope this is the information you're looking for! If I can be of
further assistance, please don't hesitate to ask for clarification.
I'll be glad to help!

Search strategy: I started with each corporate website and dug around
until I found the relevant contacts. If it wasn't available from the
company itself, I searched on the company name at Hoovers.com.
Additionally, I searcher for
[ corporate card marketing ] with Google.

Missy, you have provided some good information which may be helpful,
but I won't know until I talk to the folks with the directory. As my
original question indicated, I am not looking for the top marketing
people within the organizations, but rather the mid to lower level
marketing people, of which there may be several dozen per company.
The sample pages from the directory Card Industry Directory look like
they contain the top/main marketing people, but PROBABLY not the rest
of "marketing troops." I've contacted them to find out. If I can't
get this from them, I'll still be stuck. Any other thoughts? I'll be
looking an for a way to "accept" your answer so you can collect for
your eforts.

Hello again,

Though the directory pages shown do list the "head honcho" for each
company, the phone numbers are the general lines, not their direct
extensions. Calling these numbers will get you a secretary or
assistant who, 9 times out of 10, can either fax/e-mail a list of
middle and lower marketing personnel or can point you to the person
who can. Do keep in mind that the Mastercard/Visa companies are made
up of thousands of member financial institutions - it makes more sense
to these institutions to list only the top person. The people lower
on the totem pole aren't considered "important" enough to list. In
the case of AMEX, its cards are issued by its subsidiary, American
Express Centurion Bank. As a privately held company, they're very
close-mouthed. To get the "little guys" information, you'll have to
go directly through them.

I've dug extensively in the companies' corporate sites to try to find
more information for you, have tried numerous Hoovers and Dun &
Bradstreet searches, and have utilized several publication databases
in the hopes of scratching up more, and have unfortunately come up
empty handed. I do not have access to any further specialized
information, and find myself fresh out of ideas.

While digging some more for you, I did come across a company which
claims that it *does* have access to specialized information. I'm
hesitant to suggest it, as it is remarkably expensive, but since
you're still looking for more ideas, perhaps they might be worth an
inquiry:

Rapid Intelligence
http://www.rapidintel.com

I'd like to make a few telephone inquiries for you, but find that I
cannot today - financial institutions are closed, as it's MLK Day! I
will try this tomorrow, to see if I can find more leads for you.

While I appreciate your willingness to try to compensate me for my
time, I must insist that if you find the final results insufficient,
you let me know so I may have the answer removed. I'd rather give
someone else the chance to try to provide you with better information
than leave you with an answer you find lacking. Please give me until
the close of business tomorrow to try to reach telephone contacts,
then you can decide from there how we should proceed.

Missy...making some calls tomorrow would be great. Do you have the
ability/willingness to do this type of thing on a semi-regular basis?
I searched the google policies and did not see anything that prevents
this Based on how I have had to have names "researched" in the past
(I am an executive recruiter), I sense that you know what you are
doing. I would be willing to pay per name, and could be open to other
ideas.

Wow! I'm very flattered that you'd ask!

If you have work that you'd like me specifically to do, you can always
post your question with my name in it. If I don't spot it right away,
a colleague surely will and let me know about it, and I'll do my very
best to make sure you're taken care of.

I'll hop on the phone tomorrow morning as soon as I've shooed the
Monsters off to school and see what I can wring from contacts at local
financial institutions. Expect more before 5PM EST.

Hi sakauf,

After speaking with contacts at National City Bank, KeyBank, Charter
One Bank and SkyBank today, I'm afraid my news is grim.

In order to obtain contact information for "middle guys" outside of
the ones already listed above, you have to contact the "Card Services"
department for *each issuing bank* - you would need to know which
Corporate Card is issued by what bank.

They might or might not give you the names of the people working under
them (for example at different branches), but they typically do not
release *any* employee information except for designated contact
people (those listed in directories and web contact lists).

I'm afraid I've reached the end of my resources for this, and have run
up against the proverbial brick wall. I'm sorry I couldn't get any
further.

Please let me know how you'd like to proceed with this. If you are
not satisfied with the information I've found, I will ask the Editors
to remove the answer so someone else can try.
