Question ID: 144121
I have a Pinnacle PCTV TV-In card. I can hook up the N64 via an
S-Video cable that I bought for the N64 but i don't have any ideas on
how to get audio working too. I have ordered an RF cord for the N64
that will plug into the RF connector on the TV-In card... But the
problem with both methods is that the TV-In card is restricted to 352
x 288 pixels. So when I maximise the screen, it's all pixelated. Does
anyone have any ideas on how I can use my Nintendo 64 through my
monitor?

I'm in Australia, we use PAL format. Help would be appreciated. A tip
will be given for a good answer.

I had the exact same problem when I moved into my college dorm a
couple years back and didn't have a TV to play my N64 on.
Unfortunately there's not much you can do about the pixelation, other
than try to find a setting on your videocard which lets your reduce
the monitor resolution so that the pixelation isn't so bad. There is a
better alternative to RF though. What I decided on doing was using an
S-Video cable for the video (it's higher quality than the RCA or RF
connectors, and if you had the same Pinnacle PCTV card that I had,
it's a snap). For the sound, what you need is a $2 or $3 female-female
RCA genderchanger, and one of those Y-shaped RCA-->minijack cables
that people use to hook up computers to stereos and the like. What
you'd have to do is connect the red and white wires from the N64 into
one end of the genderchanger, and in the other end, put the RCA ends
of the Y cable. Then stick the minijack end of the cable into the
linein of your soundcard. Then when you play, you should be able to
hear the sound through your normal computer speakers (make sure that
the linein volume in the volume control panel is turned up). You can
get the genderchanger and cable from Radioshack (dunno if you have
those in Oz, but you should be able to find them in any electronics
store), and you can get the S-Video cable at any video game store. If
you cannot find an N64 S-Video cable, you can buy one made for the
Nintendo Gamecube, they use the same connector and the cable will work
for your N64. Thanks for your question, and hope that I helped!

Ooops, I forgot the most obvious answer, considering you want to hook
it up to a monitor, just buy a N64 VGA adapter and bypass your
computer directly, the video quality will be superior to that of a TV
and it should have its own separate sound outputs to hook up to
speakers. Here is one such model that I've found online:

The only caveat is the price, it's a little expensive...
