Hello ladyslip,
I am confident that your question is about a poem-prayer that was
already known to me. It is attributed to St Francis of Assissi.
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury,pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
and where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen
The words can be reached via the link Prayer I by... , which is on a
page where you can find out more about St Francis. There are links to
other prayers by him as well, of which the Canticle of Brother Sun
is probably the best known:

Sebastian Temple used this prayer as the basis of a song Make me a
channel of your peace, which I used to sing when I was a student.
The words and a midi file of the tune are available here:
http://orders.anglican.org/tssf/makeme.htm and the words with guitar
chords here: http://members.tripod.com/~onelord/080_C.html NB Some
versions of the chorus have Oh Master grant that I may never seek
(which I think is the original), while others have Spirit grant that
I may never seek
Search strategy: I knew the source of the words, so my search was to
find the lyrics and I used the search terms: Francis Assisi prayer |
