Hello ladyslip,

I am confident that your question is about a poem-prayer that was
already known to me. It is attributed to St Francis of Assissi.

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury,pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
and where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen

The words can be reached via the link “Prayer I by...” , which is on a
page where you can find out more about St Francis. There are links to
other prayers by him as well, of which the “Canticle of Brother Sun”
is probably the best known:
http://www.catholic-forum.com/saints/saintf01.htm

Sebastian Temple used this prayer as the basis of a song “Make me a
channel of your peace”, which I used to sing when I was a student.
The words and a midi file of the tune are available here:
http://orders.anglican.org/tssf/makeme.htm and the words with guitar
chords here:  http://members.tripod.com/~onelord/080_C.html  NB Some
versions of the chorus have “Oh Master grant that I may never seek”
(which I think is the original), while others have “Spirit grant that
I may never seek”

Search strategy: I knew the source of the words, so my search was to
find the lyrics and I used the search terms: Francis Assisi prayer

Hi ladyslip,

Thank you for the great rating :) That's OK about the buttons; they
can be confusing. If you push the "request clarification" one, it
means that the researcher who answered your question is alerted that
some further explanation or information might be needed. This pops
the question to the top of the list, with a big bold message "REQUIRES
CLARIFICATION". So I've just gone into the "provide clarification"
facility to write this, which will remove that message from my list.
Hope you will wish to make use of Google Answers in future!!!
